This film was released in 1974, low-budget, has almost no blood to speak of in the film and in my opinion, has to be one of the creepiest movies on DVD.

Films about the supernatural, aliens and encroaching technology don't really scare me. It's the ones that feature one of America's largely ignored, and sometimes celebrated subcultures - hicks. This is the same reason I found 'Deliverance' so unsettling, but that's the stuff of another recommendation.

Anyway, one reason this movie is messed up because the enemy seem so "homespun" and harmless at first. Except for Leatherface, whom you may not realize is part of the family at first. Another reason is this movie is disturbing is because of what you don't see, as much as what as you see.

I'm afraid if I say much more, I'll be spoiling the movie. What is shown in the film isn't as shocking as what you can find in some of today's films, such as 'Hostel' and 'Saw'. However, the pacing and brutality of the film are shocking. The inbred hicks involved in the violence are scary. They don't seem so much like stereotypes, but like people who could really be out there. Especially, for black city folks like me, this is one Hell of a fright fest. Being stranded out in the middle of nowhere. At the mercy of "the local folk"... That is truly the stuff of nightmares. (via deepdiscount.com)

This is one of my favorite movies of all-time. The remakes and sequels don't come close to the original. It's a true horror film in that it's actually scary.
