"Pan's Labyrinth" is the story of a young girl who travels with her pregnant mother to live with her mother's new husband in a rural area up North in Spain, 1944, after Franco's victory. The girl lives in an imaginary world of her own creation and faces the real world with much chagrin. Post-war Fascist repression is at its height in rural Spain and the girl must come to terms with that through a fable of her own.
The special effects and the performances, especially by Sergi Lopez as Captain Vidal, are increbbly fantastic. A bit violent but well worth seeing..

From the artistic and brilliant mind of Guillermo del Toro comes Pan's Labyrinth. I really liked this film for the story alone but the detail in everything is extraordinary. Its the sequel to his other film "The Devil's Backbone". Ivana Baquero gives a stunning performance in this surreal fairey tale that takes place after the Spanish Civil War.

I really liked this movie. Though the title suggests that it might be appropriate for children, please understand that this is NOT a kids' flick. It has some pretty creepy visuals and graphic violence. I love the costume work and story. Can i get a sequel?

One of the most beautiful films I've seen in years. It's brutal, magical, heart-lifting and heart-breaking and everything a fairytale should be. (via troubadour718)

It's like Alice in Wonderland for adults... or really, just an adult fairytale. Takes place during the Spanish Civil War, but focuses on a little girl who struggles between her own reality and everyone else's.
P.S. Please don't ignore this film just 'cause it has subtitles.
