Gift Guide: $25 or less... - a list by jbenz
Options for This Page
About this list:
One day far in the future when I no longer have control of my bodily functions, I'll be at the only store in America (Wal-Mart) spending $25 on the cheapest pair of underwear I can find and thinking: "boy, $25 sure doesn't go as far as it used to." And then I'll think about all the awesome stuff I could've bought way back in the year 2006 for a mere $25. Then I'll wish I was buying some of that stuff instead of a new pair of underwear. Then I'll struggle to find a restroom before its too late.
Qualifications:
Great design, great film, or great laughs

Description
These are some super sweet scissors from Culin Home. I love multi-functionality. I love it. The blades of the scissors can separate, creating handy paring knives. Good for just about anything, especially fishing.

Toro Tissue Ring
8 people recommended this item
Description
Toro is an alternative to the ubiquitous floral-print cardboard tissue box. The ring’s simplicity is actually the result of a carefully-engineered balance of weight and size; just right to let one tissue through at a time while staying firmly planted on the stack. Designed by Scott Christensen and purchased by Vessel

Tempo Time Tag

2 people recommended this item
Description
The Tempo Time Tag was designed by Stefane Barbeau and Dan Reilly for Vessel. It does not give you temperature readings. It does not show the date. It cannot time your 40 yard dash. And it is not functional at 10,000 feet underwater.
It does however, tell the time. And it is TINY. A tiny wearable time tag. Finally. No more fumbling around inside your purse, powering up your cell phone and flipping it open. Just glance down to the tempo attached to your purse strap.
Clip it to your sleeve, pocket, lapel, necklace, bookbag, or wherever else you can find. It comes in a set of two, one right-handed and the other left. To read the full story on Vessel's uber-talented designers, follow the link... (via Follow Function)

Flo: water deflector, protective faucet cover, and bubble bath dispenser
First to recommend
3 people recommended this item
Description
Combining multiple functions into a single device, Flo provides a simple solution to several bath time challenges. This unique product diverts the flow of water, creating a gentle waterfall, while providing a protective faucet cover to guard against injury. Flo also functions as a bubble bath dispenser.
Flo attaches easily to the bathtub faucet with a spring-activated grip that requires no assembly or special installation. When the water is turned on, it’s diverted into a stream that extends up to 12 inches in front of the faucet, creating a gentle waterfall and making rinsing hair easy. The soft material on the front edge of Flo helps protect against injuries caused by bumping or scraping against the faucet. Parents can fill the bubble bath reservoir and let children dispense bubbles into the water by pressing the button on the front. (via Follow Function)

Primer (2003)
7 people recommended this item
Description
You've never heard of this movie, but please hear it now.
Primer won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and has drawn repeat viewers eager to crack writer-director-star Shane Carruth's puzzler of a time-travel drama. Carruth, an engineer by training, plays inventor Aaron, whose entrepreneurial partnership with fellow brainiac Abe (David Sullivan) unexpectedly results in a process for traveling back several hours in time. The men initially use these rewind sessions to succeed in the stock market. But a dark consequence of their daily journeys eventually complicates matters. If this sounds like a very commercial, science fiction thriller, Primer is anything but that. Shot on 16mm for $7,000, the film has a tantalizing, sealed-in logic, akin to Memento, that forces viewers to see the fantastic with a certain dispassion. One may be tempted to sit through Primer again to more fully understand its paradoxes and ethical quandaries.
You have to want to understand this movie. Watch it once, and you'll never get it. Watch it twice, and you'll like it even more, but won't understand it. Watch it three times, once with the commentary on and then read about it for 6 hours on the internet and you'll begin to understand. It takes dedication, but its worth it.

'Salad Song' Oil & Vinegar Cruets

Description
I cannot stop admiring the way MINT products tell a story so simple and enjoyable using just a couple of objects.
The geometry of the pure cylindrical vessel is sliced and bent in one direction, forming a pour spout for the liquid inside. Alone, one cruet is a pretty cool container with an interesting form. Together, the cruets are serenading you at dinner.

'Full Contact' Spoon & Rest

Description
Another piece in MINT's full contact line (see 'Full Contact' Spice Grinder), the spoon and rest reveals more of Scott Henderson's ability to take several curves and align them in such a way as to delight the eye and encourage the touch.
A clever geometric composition allows the rest to nestle the spoon no matter which side faces up. To read more about the Mint design team, follow the link... (via Follow Function)

Holiday music at its most festive. Holiday you say? Why yes. The first audio cassette ever unwrapped, and therefore owned, by me. That was a special christmas.
But did Hammer ever hurt them? Perhaps life's greatest question.
