Club Med Last-Minute Deals

First to recommend

Description

Great site for doing just what it says- showing you last-minute, super-cheap deals to various Club Med Resorts. And I mean SUPER-CHEAP. Hope the CAPS emphasized that for you. Some of the prices are absolutely incredible.

If you got to this rec by way of the How to Join the Mile-High Club list, good. I'm glad you're taking your mission seriously.

Here's the thing- I don't care how classy you believe you are. If you pull off a mid-air boink, you're going to want to tell someone. Which is, again, why proper planning is important. You may only complete this adventure once in your life. For ONE magical trip you may live the dream. Which sounds better? "We did it in on the way to a Trek convention in Des Moines" or "We ravaged each other on the way to the beaches of Punta Cana?"

If you chose the former, get off my list. Now. Please.

If you chose the latter and found yourself giggling because somehow, some way, Punta Cana in and of itself sounds naughty, welcome to my world. Sigh.

Moroccan tea glasses

First to recommend

Description

I've been collecting these over the years because they're great at pulling off the whole double-duty decor/function role. They're a lovely size for the hand and can make an appearance from you juice at breakfast to wine in the evening to tea on your bedside table at night. Or as votives, of course.

Elegant tea glasses in carefully selected colors and decorated with Arabesque design.

* 6 tea glasses prepacked in a suitable gift box
* Carefully hand picked three colors and designs
* Measures 3.75" high x 2.5" wide

HOW TO RENT A LIGHTHOUSE

First to recommend

Description

Intelligent Life has a lovely little ditty about how to rent a lighthouse anywhere from Patagonia to Ireland.

I will let that writer's prose stand alone under the banner of "tasteful" in this rec.

My own experience with a lighthouse involves smuggling a massive bottle of red wine to the top of our local Wind Point phallic structure about a mile from my house and sitting with my legs dangling over the railings drinking straight from the bottle. Pardon me? Why yes of course I left it in the paper bag. It added to the ambience.

In any case, lighthouses are a damn good time. I think it would be fabulous and wildly romantic to actually stay in one as opposed to stumbling down the steps and tottering off home across the fields...

From INTELLIGENT LIFE magazine, Summer 2008

It's hard to imagine a more potent symbol of man's eternal struggle against the elements than the solitary white finger of a lighthouse pointing up to the sky. Today many of them have a more prosaic existence as holiday rentals: as the lights themselves became automated, the redundant keepers' dwellings were an obvious tourist opportunity.

By definition most lighthouses are in exposed coastal spots with wrap-around views of sea and sky, and for anyone who loves weather (and there are a lot of us out there) it is a thrilling drama to watch the fronts approaching from miles off in the salty air. And as well as being poignant reminders of the rigours of our seafaring past, lighthouses can provide a great perspective in a spiritual as well as a literal sense.

Colored Flame Stainless Steel Table Torch

First to recommend

Description

From the site:

You've seen artificial candles with LED lights that glow with different colors... hey we sell a few here at ThinkGeek. But how about torches with honest to goodness real fire that burn in green, red or purple? These Colored Flame Stainless Steel Table Torches forgo the standard boring yellowish fire color in favor of something a bit more interesting. Right out of a wizard's laboratory (or a high school science class lesson), the torches achieve their special color from a combination of various salts and metals that tint the flame when they burn. You get one stainless steel torch, and a 250ml bottle of oil in your color preference... enough for a burning time of 4 hours.

VivaTerra - Flowered Enamel Picnicware

First to recommend

6 people recommended this item

Description

I recently started to collect enamelware and tin plates and cups. I love how light they are- great for tossing in a picnic basket or backpack- and they come in so many great, bright, bold patterns. This set is a recent addition and looks great on our patio table.

Enamelware is also a great choice for entertaining- an upgrade from paper and plastic plates that pays for itself. How? Well think of it this way- other than the obvious fact it's re-usable, it also goes a long way towards covering your decor needs. These on a solid $3 plastic tablecloth (try black- people don't expect it on a patio table but it looks gorgeous and sets off colorful items wonderfully) and voila! Cross focal point off your decorating "to do" list for your summer party.

ICE CREAM BUCKET - RAINBOW COLORS

Description

This would make a super-cute hostess gift for a summer party and is also a great way to dress up a casual dessert item when you have friends over. Best of all? It hides the bazillion fat grams from sight when you're shovelling the Chunky Monkey in during a midnight foraging session....
