Brita Water Filtration Pitcher, Chrome, 8 x 8 oz Glasses
First to recommend
Description
One of the healthiest things a person can do for their body is to drink more water. However, water quality is an important consideration. Using a Brita Water Filtration Pitcher is an affordable way to affect your water's quality.
The filter in this pitcher is certified by the NSF and Water Quality Association to reduce chlorine, benzene, lead, sediment and other harmful contaminants that may be found in your tap water.
These contaminants can contribute to a number of potential health effects including: high blood pressure, kidney problems and damage, anemia, gastrointestinal distress and liver damage.
Brita keeps a healthy amount of flourine, which is added to water systems to promote strong teeth.
What I have noticed in switching from straight tap water to Brita-filtered water is better taste. It makes your hot and cold drinks taste a hell of a lot better. (via drugstore.com)

GreenPan ™ Sauté Pan

Description
Not only do the coatings of non-stick pans contain toxic compounds which break down when heated at high temperatures, but they also emit ozone-destroying greenhouse gases at the same time! I know, now even cooking is bad for us and the environment. Crate and Barrel has come up with an alternative...
This "green" cookware is finished in Thermalon ™, the first patented ceramic-based, nano-composite non-stick coating that performs at temperatures up to 850 degrees without deterioration. Thermalon ™ releases 50% less greenhouse gases during production, and contains no toxic substances that might be released at high temperatures.
With its heavy-duty aluminum and stainless steel construction, you sacrifice nothing in performance and reduce your carbon footprint at the same time! (via crateandbarrel.com)

Dracaena Warneckei - Smith & Hawken
First to recommend
Description
Dracaena Warneckei is popular with the interior plantscape industry because of its tolerance of low light levels and the dry air commonly found in commercial buildings.
However, it is a favorite house plant. It is especially effective on the removal of benzene. Some consumer products such as cleaning products, detergents, cigarette smoke, paint stripper and glues contain benzene.
At any rate, the Dracaena Warneckei is an excellent overall house plant. (via smithandhawken.com)

'Dieffenbachia' Dumb Cane - Smith & Hawken
First to recommend
Description
The genus Dieffenbachia was named in 1830 in honor the German botanist, J.F. Dieffenbach. It derives its common name, dumb cane, from the calcium oxalate in its sap. Chewing any part of the plant causes temporary numbness of the tongue and vocal chords.
This is a popular plant that is highly valued for its attractive pattern and color. The leaves often provide as much color as plants in bloom and its broad leaves also help to add moisture to the surrounding air. Its foliage is usually green with white and yellow marbled patterns.
This is a plant that helps to clean the air in your home, and actually helps with the removal of chemical vapors. It prefers bright filtered light as occurs near a window. (via smithandhawken.com)

POM Pomegranates
2 people recommended this item
Description
In Greek mythology, Persephone, the personification of Earth's fertility was said to be eating pomegranates when God of the Underworld Hades saw her, was smitten, came, snatched and made off with her. What can I say? He had good taste. And so did she. The health benefits of pomegranates are astounding to say the very least. The amount of potassium alone is enough to make a banana blush. Plus, they are simply delicious. You probably burn more calories eating one than is in the actual fruit itself.

Airfree Platinum 2000 - Mold & Germ Destroying Air Purifier 550 sq.ft.
First to recommend
Description
This is the filterless air purifier which uses heated air to destroy airborne mold, bacteria, viruses, dust mites, and pollens. Unlike commonly available ionic units, it does not produce harmfully elevated ozone levels; it also reduces existing indoor ozone, which the America Lung Association indicates can be a serious respiratory irritant and asthma trigger. In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto: Michael Pollan: Books
First to recommend
Description
Writing In Defense of Food, and affirming the joy of eating, Pollan suggests that if we would pay more for better, well-grown food, but buy less of it, we'll benefit ourselves, our communities, and the environment at large. Taking a clear-eyed look at what science does and does not know about the links between diet and health, he proposes a new way to think about the question of what to eat that is informed by ecology and tradition rather than by the prevailing nutrient-by-nutrient approach. Germ Guardian H1000 TableTop Humidifier
First to recommend
Description
Furnaces and air conditioners strip your home's air of much needed moisture. This is much more noticeable during the Winter months. In lieu of boiling endless pots of water on the stove, and on a doctor's advice, I purchased a humidifier. I went with a "greener" and more energy-efficient model. One that uses nano-silver technology to prevent bacteria and mold from growing inside of it, and uses no wasteful pads or filters. It's a very small tabletop model that emits a cool mist and is relatively quiet. After a couple of hours of operation, there was a noticeable difference in air quality. I highly recommend. Description
I am very skeptical of self-help books, but this book's basic premise does make sense. I'm very curious to read further and see what insights it holds. I mean, why else would I be going to see a naturopath if I didn't believe in a holistic approach to healing? (via amazon.com)

A frighteningly fascinating look at how "far away" we live from the food we eat everyday. Michael Pollan looks at four very common meals in the US, and where they came from.
