Send in the Gladiators! - a list by nanashi

About this list:
Everyone knows what a gladiator's job REALLY was. It wasn't fighting the lions and tigers and bears (oh my!), impressing emporers, pleasing Gods or defending against Spartan warriors. Their job was to model one of the country;s most stylish fashion items (no, not a toga)! Today, gladiator sandals are hotter than ever. Kate Moss having started the trend a few years ago, but, hey, all trends take a few (thousand, if you count the ancient Romans) years to take off. So, here are some of my favourites.
Qualifications:
I know the pain of losing a fight to bad gladiator sandals.

Description
A simple, feminine and practical version of the gladiator sandal. Probably very similiar to what the ancient Roman women wore to win over the Persians.

It's not easy wearing gladiator sandals without people assuming you are in costume ... and that's all I have to say about that.

Description
A beautiful pair of gladiator sandals with charming beading reminiscent of the days of yore, spent idly beading friendship bracelets by the campfire.... Well, I suppose someone will reminice about those times.

Description
I like gladiator sandals. But I often think, "what would the gladiators think of these modern day interpretations?" Personally, I think they'd be pissed. they are uncomportable, strappy, plastic and heeled. Imagine slaying a lion in those! These sandals at least look true to their origins. These leather sandals wrap up around your ankle and then ties, with a small, almost imperceptible heel. And, they are hand made.

Description
How many gladiator sandals have you seen that have so many straps, a heel that looks like an oversized toothpick and far too much fushia adornments to be considered even remotely "gladiator" related. Besides, with that many gaudy embellishments, the whole thing is going to look tacky anyways. This sweet little shoe at least looks comfortable, is in a tasteful color and has enough little touches to keep it from looking boring. It ties close AND offers some ankle support, so you'll never have to worry about needing to stop to readjust your sandal, and laugh at all the other girl's as they try to fix their toothpick-resembling-over-strappy-gaudy "gladiator" sandals. Not to be mean, but to be true to the term "gladiator" of course.
