A Room of One's Own, by Virginia Woolf

First to recommend

Description

"A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction." This is a fantastic essay that discusses the never ending challenges that female artists face. Although this was written in the late 1920's the message still holds true and for all women. I think it is a great gift simply because I keep giving my copy away to any woman I meet who hasn't read it.

If you enjoy satire and/or British humor you will really enjoy The Discworld Series. The series does not need to be read in order but sometimes it helps. Each new installment seems better than the one before.

Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment, by James Patterson

First to recommend

Description

I happened to pick this up out of curiosity (I am a sucker for fantasy novels) and I really, really enjoyed it. The story is told in the voice of the heroine who is only fourteen years old. As a result of genetic mutation she and five other kids (her "flock") have wings and can fly. It is action packed and fun and it is great for teens. Also there is a whole website and blog supposedly written by one of the characters.

Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury

Description

I just read this again for the first time in many years (+/-). This was the first story that introduced me to science fiction and Ray Bradbury. I remember being heartbroken and incensed at the whole idea of book-burning. When I read it recently the story took on a whole new level of familiarity to a our current culture what with the subject of censorship and the idea of television existing as the sole means of education. This story is frighteningly timeless.

Mistress of the Art of Death, by Ariana Franklin

Description

I really enjoyed this book. Other than the fact that the protagonist is a woman, which I totally dig, she is strong, smart and crafty. I get so tired of books that only describe female leads as awe inspiringly beautiful by any standard developed the world over. In this tale, Franklin's Adelia is a normal looking lady who is very intelligent and is just trying to make it as a doctor in a man's world. A 12th century European man's world.

Preferably alone or maybe with rejuvenating friends, but no one else. With all of those great books a mom will need to get away somewhere quiet for a weekend to even begin to make a dent in that reading list.

Bath & Body Works Detoxifying Sea Salt Scrub & Soak 2-in-1

Description

I love, love, loooove a nice hot bath with a good book and some fancy sea salts. I just got some of this stuff and it is a lovely little thing that makes my bath feel absolutely luxurious. I only use one scoop (it comes with a nifty little shell shaped scooper) in very warm water and I can feel it drawing out the toxins. After that bath my skin is nice and soft but not greasy feeling.

Olive U

Description

Olive U has some of the most comfortable casual clothes out there. I especially love the thermals but the Denise Pants are super soft and comfy. Also, all of the clothes have cute appliqués sewn on them.

These would be the perfect gift for any mom, especially to wear on her get-away spa weekend. Ha!
