No Regrets ~ Marianne Faithfull

Updated Feb 21, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

A compilation album of tracks recorded in Nashville. Originally released in 1977 -- these tracks originally appeared [with slight variations] on both Dreaming My Dreams and Faithless. However - No Regrets contains several tracks not previously released in the U.S. Deceptively upbeat pop songs delivered with Faithfull’s now signature ravaged vocals. These songs were Faithfull’s first after a 10 year hiatus from recording – after hard knocks and even harder living had taken a toll on her voice…and her attitude. An album of country flavored pop songs that bridge the gap between her innocent school girl pop recordings of the 60s and her absolutely jaw-dropping 1979 “come back” album – Broken English. Tattoo You ~ The Rolling Stones

Updated Dec 3, 2007

Description

Out of so many big name bands the Rolling Stones seem to have the best packaging design. I used to display the cover of Tattoo You just because I was impressed with the cover art. Now I'm actually listing to the music as well and I'm enjoying it's soul inspired tracks. In the past the hits on "Tattoo You" were what I always listed to--those hits on enough compilations, so now I've started to dig back into my Stones library for hidden glimmering rocks, and I'm playing the lesser known tracks like "Slave", "Worried About You", and "Tops", these songs carry as much musical groove as songs like "Waiting on A Friend, but aren't over exposed and so they steel feel fresh and shinny.

Brigitte Bardot

Description

I picked up this album while I looked for her TV special on DVD, and I was quickly seduced by Bardot's breathy voice. Over many recordings professional entertainer, icon, model, actress Bardot provides an elastic command of her installment, some times, as a sexy Anjou, some times as a ye-ye girl, some times she's daring smoldering and dramatic, and other times she's cute and quirky. I can say Brigitte Bardot will always remain in my music library.

I was struck by the cover art on this recommendation, I like the use of negative space within this images, it feels both like shadow puppetry and stencil art. The work lines that describe the characters within the frame is seductive, I'd like to see more work like this.

Daisies

Updated Nov 13, 2007

Description

The cover image and the title "Daisies -- Original Soundtrack To The Groundbreaking Czech New Wave Classic" brings a smile to my face. I don't own this album and I've only seen it on line, but the description from Dusty Groove seems like something I'd like.

About this:
An amazing soundtrack to an amazing film -- a Czech new wave classic that's supported by sounds as dynamic as the images on the screen! There's a really playful feel to the whole thing -- much more so than other Finders Keepers reissues in recent years -- and the music jumps along in a mix of military moments, folkloric elements, jazzy bits, and some spare, simple melodies -- almost a bit like Nino Rota's best for Fellini, but a lot crazier overall! Instrumentation has some almost Moondog touches at the best points -- repetitive woodwind or piano bits, with some grittier, organic elements at the bottom -- and although much of the music is by the team of Jiri Suchy and Jiri Slitr, there's also other bits that crash into the mix too -- almost with a surprising, abrupt sort of quality. Titles include "Peach Tree Thieves", "Threes A Crowd", "Red Carpet", "Burning Ribbons", "Girlies Girlies", "Roses Red Roses Red", "Cuckoos", "Scissors", and "Beggars Banquet". (via Dusty Groove)

Grinderman - Grinderman

Updated Apr 4, 2008

Description

The disgruntled soliloquies, the discarded remains of adult disillusion superimposed over male angst, and the all knowing blues poetics rammed up the back end of Grinderman's self titled album is a welcome addition to my Nick Cave playlist. The scrappy guitar noise and thick power-mad drum on bass atmosphere gives these dark Grinderman songs of love gone wrong physical a sound that begs your attention. It's good road music--I'll drive to it

Lubos Fiser: Valerie & Her Week Of Wonders

Updated Oct 29, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

A dark little soundtrack that we'd pitch right up there with The Wicker Man or Rosemary's Baby -- and one with a sound that's somewhere in between those two classics! The work was penned for an obscure early 70s film in the Czech new wave -- and features music that's sometimes a bit folksy, sometimes a bit spiritualist -- served up in a blend of light orchestrations, occasional choral passages, and eerie isolated instruments that include flute, harpsichord, organ, and bells! There's a darkly brooding quality that really reminds us of Komeda's last great moments for Polanski -- but the overall sound is a bit freer, and more illustrative as well -- little snippets of poetry in sound, created with a feel that's as evocative as the images they were designed to accompany. CD features 23 tracks in all -- titles that include "The Magic Yard", "Talk With Grandmother", "The Letter", "The Sermon", "Sacrifice", "Questions & Answers", "Homeless", "Puppets", "In Flames", "Brother & Sister", "Forgiveness", and "And The Last".

So Kaburagi: Stray Cat Rock - Sex Hunter/Furyo Syojo Mako

Updated Oct 29, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

Freaky fuzzy grooves from two obscure Nikkatsu movies -- both of them scored by So Kaburagi in a great blend of heavy drums and tripped-out guitar -- with lots of funky moments throughout! The music here almost outdoes some of the best psyche-inspired soundtracks from the US and Europe in the late 60s -- and like some of the best of those, Kaburagi brings in some slight jazz undercurrents as well -- softening things briefly in a few romantic moments with a saxophone, but mostly relying on fuzzy guitar, go-go drums, and a bit of organ to keep most of the tunes going. A few numbers feature larger backings, and from what we can tell, most of the work here is instrumental only -- a whopping 28 tracks in all, with all titles and notes in Japanese! (via ffffound)

Get Ready ~ New Order

Updated Nov 13, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

The collision between British musicians and Black American music has produced an ever growing treasury of limb-pulsing, butt-shaking, hart-swelling music, which--thankfully is often the result of soul-brothers and sisters made from the most unlikely sort--case in point, New Order. In "Get Ready" New Order ditch the temptation of dance-floor stagnation for what seems to be a reach for that mythical pop radio sound--dead since the late 80's--guess what, the idea turns out well. "Get Ready" a hybrid of post-punk-pop-and-b push songs you can sing (even when you don't know the words), music and melody that seem so familiar that you'd think they are pop standards.

About the cover design of "Get Ready", at the time gave New Order a much needed youth fueled look firmly placed in the now, yet over the years this image of a young woman holding a consumer video camera will look less of the now, and more of the then, the then you missed out on, the then that was really cool. Nice work :)
