Soulsville U.S.A.: The Story Of Stax Records
First to recommend
Description
You NEED to know the story of Stax and more importantly if you don't know the artists, you need to know them! It doesn't get any more soulful or better than Sam and Dave, Booker T. and the MG's, Issac Hayes, Otis Redding.....(the list goes on and on...you get the picture). The motor city might have had Hitsville, but Memphis was all about the Soul baby!

I always have been and always will be an Izzy girl. However, that doesn't mean I don't have some love for Slash too.Whether or not you are a fan of hard rock, you can't deny that Slash is one mean MOFO on the guitar! I also love that he has a unique style, that you can always tell it is him when he plays. Not all guitarists are like that. Slash has been and always will be a cut above. Aside from him being a phenomenal guitarist, I will always have a soft spot for him, as we share the same birthday (day and year). It also seems that over the years despite his addictions, he always seems like a cool and nice guy! I love that he finally decided to put pen to paper and tell his story! A must read for any rock fan!

The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star by Nikki Sixx
First to recommend
Description
This book is basically a year in the life (via diary entries) of Nikki Sixx. What I love about this book is it in no way, shape or form glorifies the dysfunction that can come with being a rock star (excess booze, drugs, meaningless relationships, etc.). If anything, Sixx released this as a warning as to what can happen. I love that he is honest about where he was at the time. He's since come through it as a stronger person. As humans I think we all have our different issues, whether it be drugs, drink, shopping addiction, overeating, etc. Sixx put his humanness out there for everyone to see. I think Sixx has been through a lot and has turned out to be a pretty great human.

Highway to Hell : The Life and Times of AC/DC Legend Bon Scott by Clinton Walker

Description
Along with my beloved Keef, Bon is a true rock and roll pirate. One question I always like to ask people is Bon Scott or Brian Johnson? I've yet to meet anyone who has answered Brian Johnson (although as far as being a replacement, replacement being the key word here, they could not have done better. Everyone needs to know about Bon!

Punk 365 (365 Series)

Description
This book has some amazing pictures! What I love most is that it is not just a big book with pix of the Sex Pistols! It has a very wide variety of bands. I also have to admit I'm biased because it has some great pix of my secret punk rock boyfriend, Richard Hell (its so secret he doesn't even know)!

Music by Mavens
Updated May 14, 2008
Music by women who are true Mavens (and a few who are new on the scene and appear to be up and coming Mavens, IMO).
