Wemberly Worried
First to recommend
Description
Kevin Henkes writes and illustrates a great story in "Wemberly Worries" about a child who is worried about the first day of school. (Spoiler: Everything turns out just fine and Wemberly makes a new friend, Jewel.) "Wemberly Worries" helps children understand how to deal with stress and fear of the unknown. It may even help adults.
[On an aside, why are there so many childrens' books staring rats and mice?]

A Bad Case Of Stripes
First to recommend
Description
Camilla has a bad case of Stripes. You see, she wakes up one morning and is covered in bright colored stripes. David Shannon once again draws incredible illustrations backed by a wonderful story in "A Bad Case of Stripes".
I'm not sure if my kids get the concept of eating healthier foods (no spoiler here so you'll have to read the book to find out) but they still laugh.

Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type
First to recommend
Description
You have to laugh when you read about cow's typing and how infuriating their demands are to Farmer Brown. Betsy Lewin's illustrations are lush, colorful and curvaceous. This book offers characters of diverse backgrounds that it is easy to have good, distinct voices for Farmer Brown and for the notes from the cows and Duck.
The sequel "Giggle Giggle Quack" is worth a read as well but is not quite as good as the original. It is about Farmer Brown taking a vacation and Duck having fun with Farmer Brown's brother who is watching the farm and the animals.

Good Boy, Fergus!
First to recommend
Description
Fergus is a cute white terrier. It turns out, Fergus is David Shannon's dog and has had cameo appearances in all of David Shannon's books. In "Good Boy, Fergus!" he gets his own title role.
As always, great illustrations. Rich colors. Strong lines. And writing is as funny as you might expect from David Shannon.
(Available in Spanish, too as "Muy Bien, Fergus!")

Mad About Madeline
First to recommend
Description
Madeline is a classic children's books for girls and boys. Ludwig Bemelmans writing is simple and usually rhyming while his drawings are rich and colorful.
My cousin gave this set of all of the Madeline stories to my daughter when she was born. I read it to my son for a few years and then to my daughter who still enjoys these books.
Of course, I drive my kids nuts by starting every story with a variation of "In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines..." For example, Harry Potter begins "In an old castle at Hogwarts that was covered with vines, lived 12 little wizards in 2 straight lines."

No, David!
First to recommend
Description
Yes, everyone named David can relate to "No David!" and thinks that David Shannon wrote the book about and for them. I am no different. "No David!"is all about my childhood.
My kids love this book. While they giggled over my reading this book to them, they howl with their biggest belly laughs as I read it as "Yes David!" We change all of the bad things into commands from Mom. While I can convert spilling juice on the floor to positively redecorating, I can't make pulling the cat's tail positive.
If you haven't read "No David!" (or any David Shannon book for that matter), you really should. You owe it to your (inner?) child.

The Great Gracie Chase: Stop That Dog!
First to recommend
Description
"The Great Gracie Chase:Stop that Dog!" is such a great book that it deserves 2 titles. Gracie is a dog. She likes her quiet house. Imagine her shock when the painters come one day and make lots of noise. That is how the Great Gracie Chase begins.
Mark Teague should have won a Caldecott for the illustrations of any of his books. "The Great Gracie Chase" is no exception. Cynthia Rylant writes a great story as usual.
Kids love to say the fish's line: "Ploop ploop."

The Seven Silly Eaters
First to recommend
Description
My 5 year-old daughter looooooooves "The Seven Silly Eaters". She could have me read this book to her every night.
Read about the Peters family and its seven children who each eat only one thing.
Good story. Great illustrations. Funny. Near perfect meter.

Duck in the Truck

Description
This is one of the best illustrated children's books I have read to my kids. It is wrong that Jez Alborough did not earn a Caldecott Award for this book or any of his other books.
Duck appears nice enough as he gets help from bystanders Frog, Sheep and Goat to get his truck out of the muck. They push, they pull and in the end Duck's true colors are shown (pun intended).
The illustrations burst from the page. The frame is broken by the images and pages may contain several frames working together.
The characters are richly drawn with bold lines and vivid colors.
Voices? Yeah, it's got voices.

The Maestro Plays
First to recommend
Description
Clean, colorful drawings let this remake of a classic be a classic itself and a blast to read. When I read this to my daughter's kindergarten class, they demanded that I read it a second time.
The words are fun to read at varying speeds with fun inflections. The Maestro plays in carious ways including Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiippppppppppppppppingly and Trrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiippppppppppppppppppingly to name but a few.
Try it... you'll have to read it a second time!c
