What a girl geek wants - a list by hanahula

About this list:

I grew up in an era when a calculator was considered high tech, so I am simply floored by the current pace of technological change. Yet, I don't want to purchase something just because it's the latest (and supposedly greatest) new gadget. Here is what I have found to be fun, useful and/or relatively easy to use.

Qualifications:

Quite simply, I am a girl and a geek.

Buzzword: Word processor

First to recommend

Description

If you are working on the fly or don't have a lot of extra space on your hard drive, you may want to try Buzzword. This Adobe application is now available for free (just register with your email address) and you can start creating your novel, memoir, letter to the editor, or dissertation. Plenty of formatting options available, although certainly not as robust as Microsoft Word. Even the interface is attractive. Not bad for a freebie. (via Adobe)

booq: Mamba sling

First to recommend

Description

Aside from looking good, this laptop bag comes with numerous pockets and an accessory pouch to carry all of those other gadgets you cannot live without. And each booq has a unique number affixed to the bag, which enables booq's Terralinq™ Service to track your bag if it is stolen. Not theft-proof, but pretty good for a low-profile pack.

Crumpler USA

6 people recommended this item

Description

Crumplers are actually created in Australia, but are now also available within the USA. Outside, they are made from water-resistant nylon in an array of unique designs. Inside, they can store laptops, camera equipment, your lunch, or just some notebooks depending upon the size you choose. They also offer a special shell (known as the "School Hymn") which can be used as a mini-workstation when open on a desk. If you are a vagabond, a Crumpler would be my recommendation.

Especially when it comes to data storage, the more the merrier. Recognizing how quickly and easily you can add music, photos and other personal favorites to your new best friend, it has wisely upped the capacity on its latest iPhone model.
