What a girl geek wants - a list by hanahula

About this list:

I grew up in an era when a calculator was considered high tech, so I am simply floored by the current pace of technological change. Yet, I don't want to purchase something just because it's the latest (and supposedly greatest) new gadget. Here is what I have found to be fun, useful and/or relatively easy to use.

Qualifications:

Quite simply, I am a girl and a geek.

LoJack for Laptops - Stolen Computer Recovery

First to recommend

Description

Using a program known as "Computrace" which resides in a hidden location on your laptop, LoJack is able to track and find a stolen laptop in 3 out of 4 incidents. Despite the frequency of laptop theft, only 97% of most stolen laptops are ever recovered (based upon current FBI estimates.) Protecting your investment in hardware, software and original work with a LoJack subscription seems like a no-brainer, especially when you own something as uniquely attractive as a MacBook Air.

Eye-Fi Wireless SD Card

16 people recommended this item

Description

Particularly when you don't have a lot of extra ports (as is the case with many laptops) or you don't have any peripherals handy, sending data in a wireless format is the next best solution. Now, Eye-Fi will enable you to do just that, only with pictures you take on your digital camera (with this card installed.) You can upload to your own computer or to a website such as Facebook or Kodak Gallery. Then, you can use your MacBook Air to review your photos at your leisure.

Although you cannot actually purchase this home, it is a source of wonderful design inspiration. Developed in collaboration with the Home Depot, Duke's Smart Home is a living laboratory of green solutions. And,the house does in fact include several working laboratories for further research. You just might want to plan a trip to Durham, North Carolina to take a peek at what these Duke students have created. (via Duke University)

Thinkmap Visual Thesaurus

2 people recommended this item

Description

Not simply a thesaurus, but an entirely new way at discovering words, their meanings and derivations, even the correct pronunciation. For anyone who has ever struggled with that word just sitting on the tip of their tongue, or wanted a better word to describe or elucidate, or is simply curious about what something really means. An amazing new way to actually look at language and, perhaps, see something clearly for the first time. Maybe even have a verbal epiphany. You can try it free for two weeks, subscribe on a monthly or yearly basis, or buy the whole software program to install on your computer.

If you want to ensure that you have the appropriate equipment to watch the Superbowl, then buy yourself one of these. Just unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, this television is reported to have the best picture quality of any television available on the U.S. market. The O.L.E.D. refers to the Organic Light Emitting Diode residing within this television and that makes its picture so darn gorgeous. REALLY get your game on. (via David Pogue)

STRANGEco Toy

First to recommend

Description

This little creature designed by Nathan Jurevicius falls into the category of "so ugly it's cute" . . . which happens to be one of my soft spots. I'm just not sure whether, technically speaking, this is art, toy or gadget. Since it also glows in the dark, I envision it as a combination of all three. Probably not a good gift for a toddler, however. (via STRANGEco)
