Waking Up Is Hard To Do... - a list by radstuff

About this list:

I'm a night person, so mornings are a bit tough on me. I cannot function normally until I get a few cups in. Here's a few things I use, or would use if I could afford them, to get past the first few hours of the day.

Qualifications:

I am addicted to coffee.

Don Francisco Medium Kona Blend

First to recommend

Description

This is my everyday coffee. It's got enough strength to get me going, but isn't so strong that it hurts if I drink the whole pot. The Kona beans add a subtle flavor to the otherwise very tasty Mexican beans that comprise this blend, and because it's a blend, it won't break the bank. It's also commonly available; I've never had to pay more than $8 for a 12 oz. bag of beans at my local grocery store.

Ritual Coffee Roasters - Mug

First to recommend

Description

I love coffee. I prefer it in a decent-sized mug. I love the Ritual logo, which makes me hope for a communist takeover of major chains.

Ritual Coffee Roasters - Life Saver Espresso

First to recommend

Description

Every time I'm in the Mission, I stop at Ritual for a cup or two. They roast their own, and it is damn good. Plus, they have an awesome logo. I'd much rather see it on every corner in LA than the green girl. This is a terrific, rich chocolaty espresso blend, and it works well in my Moka.

Bialetti 9 Cup Moka Espresso Stovetop Coffee Maker

First to recommend

Description

If you're on a budget, like I am, but you enjoy your espresso-style coffee, you can make it yourself with one of these handy cafeteras. I own this size, because I like a good sized cup or two and find that the smaller models won't fill my mug when I want a healthy dose of cafe con leche. These pots will last forever, and if you don't mind missing out on the little bit of froth you get from a machine, it makes a great espresso, or add some water for a nice big Americano. Truly a kitchen item I couldn't live without.

Cuisinart DCC-1200 12-Cup Brew Central Coffeemaker

First to recommend

Description

I received one of these as a gift to replace my broken Mr. Coffee, and I have to admit, it does a great job making a nice strong cup. The shape of the filter helps milk every last drop of bean juice out of the grounds, unlike flat bottom basket filters. It comes with a charcoal filter, so you can use tap and still get purified water to minimize any negative effects if your local tap water isn't the greatest. It also looks great; mine has a shiny metal face. Add a nice big pot, and even I can't finish what I brew most days. It's got a timer, so you can set it the night before and wake up to find your coffee waiting for you (if you can remember to set it, which I rarely can). The only downside of this maker is that the lcd clock isn't lit, so it's a little hard to set.

Braun KSM2-BLK Aromatic Coffee Grinder

First to recommend

Description

Just about any coffee grinder will grind well enough for a drip coffee maker, but I use this little gem for all consistencies. It's just a simple matter of how long you let it grind...a few seconds for the coarser grind for the drip, a few more to grind it for the cafetera. Just be careful; it's pretty powerful, and if you grind too long you'll end up with powder, which can make your coffee muddy.

VeV Vigano Kontessa Nero Espresso Maker

First to recommend

Description

My stovetop espresso maker is the classic, familiar design, but it is rather utilitarian. Vev Vigano makes some very nice and stylish espresso makers that are far more design-conscious, but still perfectly functional. I wonder if these art deco inspired designs would work in my 70's-era kitchen?

Bialetti Mini Express 2-Cup Stovetop Percolator

First to recommend

Description

I have a large 8-cup cafetera that I use all the time; it's my espresso maker on the cheap, and nothing else will do when I want the strong stuff. This little contraption cuts out the need to even pour as it percolates right into your cup. Looks like it might be a bit of a balancing act, but nifty nonetheless. Just don't get impatient and put your mouth on the spouts, or you'll end up looking like you've got a bad case of herpes.
