Newfangled, Untangled - a list by Andrea

About this list:
You know that magazine, Wired? For me, the term "wired" evokes some Clockwork-Orange-Matrix style future where we're all jacked into a giant adapter to live out our lives in an invented reality while the real world wastes away into a lifeless rock. Ignoring what that says about my inner life for now, wouldn't you prefer a magazine called "Wireless"? I would, and here's a list of the wireless items, electronic and otherwise, that make my world a more lively, less Matrixy place.

I pay utilities in New York City.

iPod Retro Mini Speakers

Description
Hah! Portable iPod speakers designed to look like Lego blocks; brilliant, and such a natural retro-current geek marriage almost shocking no one's thought of it before ($19.95 at delight.com).

Moleskine 2008 Soft Weekly Planner
First to recommend
6 people recommended this item
Description
Nothing means the start of a new year like the purchase of a brand new, crisp, clean, completely blank Moleskine weekly planner. Though the Italian company calls itself "The legendary notebook of Hemingway, Picasso, and Chatwin", it actually opened in 1996, and fashions its notebooks after Chatwin's descriptions of his beloved notebook (which were produced in France). Nonetheless, with the week on the left and room for notes on the right, a large pocket in the back, a ribbon bookmark for easy access to the current date, and that signature oilcloth cover and elastic closure, it is the closest thing I've found to a perfect weekly planner (I turn mine sideways to view the week landscape-style). ($10.45 at MoleskineUS) (via ThisNext Blog)

Garter Purse

Description
If you want to experience THE DANCE without a purse batting you in the ribs, but you're not sold on the Spring fanny pack look - and really, even if you are - ditch it for a hotter, sleeker, more convenient Lara Croft style garter purse. And while you're at it - get me one. ($19 at Bisadora)

FireSteel

Description
Swedish FireSteel sounds really scary and military, and indeed it is a military instrument - used to start fires. So like, basically terrifying matches, but they're called FIRESTEEL, like some champion horse or silent ninja. FIRESTEEL.

Stainless Steel Pocket Subway Map

Description
Look at you - you've got a new GPS tracking system in your handbag. Cumbersome, isn't it? Yeah, it looks uncomfortable. This? This is just my old fashioned map. Yeah, it's etched in steel, so it looks elegant and gentlemanly and I always know where I'm going, minus the Lite Brite accessories. Oh, I see, you travel by car and don't live in London or New York. How...quaint.

Bendi Light Up Keyboard

Description
Admittedly, you don't need a cordless, waterproof, bendable, washable keyboard that lights up. You also don't need both your kidneys. Discuss. ($49 at Gadget Box) (via skibblymook)

Wooden LED Clock

A perfect hybrid between organic and electronic, this seriously beautiful device has a place in any true gentleman's home. Besides mine. But I wouldn't be mad if someone got me one.

BlackBerry 8700c Wireless Handheld Device
First to recommend
Description
I love my Blackberry. I called it my "BlackBaby" for a while, until someone gently pointed out how inappropriate that sounds. It hadn't crossed my mind, because my Blackberry really is my little baby - it carries my email, it emits adorable cooing sounds when I have messages, and it's an indispensable tool for a freelancer with no office to call my own.

Canon PowerShot S50 5MP Camera

Description
Sure, most camera are wireless - or maybe all - no, definitely all - but this is my camera, and I've had it for 6 years, from when they still made digital cameras out of metal because they were still competing with the last vestiges of film cameras - and it's never broken, and it's never stalled, and it's amazing.

Twilight Umbrella

3 people recommended this item
Description
This umbrella is covered with blue LED lights, with settings that allow the lights to either glow solidly or twinkle like christmas lights, creating "a gentle galaxy of blinking lights". Hooray! As I've said before, umbrellas should not only protect you from rain, but allow you to forget that rain, or sadness, exist in the world. GENIUS!
