GENEWIZ, Inc.: DNA Sequencing, Molecular Biology, Genomic Services

First to recommend

Description

DNA sequencing tends to get done by core facilities at most institutions, but if you're in the New York/New Jersey area and you need sequencing done, you couldn't do better than Genewiz. You give them miniprep quality DNA and they give you sequence. Results are emailed to you quickly and even on Saturdays. So now your boss can legitimately call you on Saturday and ask about those clones. Oh joy!

They have two speeds, fast and faster:
"Standard Service - Data reported within one business day after samples are delivered to GENEWIZ.
Same Day Service - Data reported by 5pm EST the same day samples are delivered to GENEWIZ (by 10 am EST). Up to 94 samples per order, in most cases an additional charge applies."

I try not to pimp too many companies associated with my work, but these guys really do rock. When I was asking around for recommendations for a company to do sequencing, theirs was the only name that came up.

For Love of Insects: Thomas Eisner

First to recommend

Description

Okay, so here's the thing: insects are incredibly cool. You probably don't even realize how cool they are just yet, but if you read this book, it will give you an idea of the level of cooliosity.

Eisner tells about his career studying insects. This is not a dry tome of exhaustive and uninteresting research. Instead, Eisner brings the process of discovery to life and explains about bombardier beetles and other insects.

Yellow Ibis Science t-shirts

First to recommend

Description

There are a number of science t-shirts you can get out there. "Talk nerdy to me" and "I [heart] my geek." and so on. Yellow Ibis has shirts that say things like "I [three neck flask] chemistry" and a skull and crossbones with the crossbones replaced by pipetors, and this really cool glow in the dark benzene ring. Or for the geologist in your life, "I date rocks." Or for a more all purpose shirt, "I blinded me with science."

Yeah, I could spend most of my paycheck here. Easily. Or you could spend most of your paycheck here, buying shirts for me. Hint, hint.

I'd list individual shirts, but the site is not ThisNext friendly and I have experiments I should be doing.

xkcd store

First to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

I'd like to put links for a few items in the xkcd store, but there are no individual pages for individual items, so I'm just plopping them all down right here.

Xkcd is a brilliant comic for the nerdkind which just makes me happy. Adding to that happy are t-shirts saying things like "science, it works bitches" and "stand back, I'm going to try science"

Do you have a friend who is a geek? Well they probably read xkcd already so why not give them the "Actual Size" stickers to play with, or a map of the internet poster? They'll love you forever.

Pretty much everyone in lab wants one or the other of these t-shirts. I know I want the one with the scientist riding some ciliated single cell organism.
