Etsy Seller: Molecular Muse

First to recommend

Description

Molecular jewelry. Etched glasses with more molecules. There is a definite emphasis on steroid molecules as well as a few neurochemicals. If you have a geek in your life, he or she might enjoy these.

I wonder if the molecular muse makes custom molecules because I can think of a few ones that I'd love to wear.

First to recommend

3 people recommended this item

Description

Raising luna moths from cocoon is easy and you'll get to see these unbelievable pale green enormous moths. Alternatively, you can get a set of six moth cocoons (3 Luna and 3 Polyphemus).

A great science project for a kid but still magical for adults. (via My dad)

Mon KEYS - Key caps

29 people recommended this item

Description

I have a million keys between home keys and various lab keys. What better way to remember which key unlocks the conference room than by saying, oh yeah, it is the dead monkey. Or the key to the microscopy room is the upset monkey, or ... you get the idea.

The key to my apartment will always be the happy monkey.

Caveat: if you use a metal key ring, the kind where you rotate the keys on, it will rip these and they will eventually disintegrate. I'm sure they would have been fine if I had had a key ring that opened. (via Chicago Apartment Therapy)

Pedia Pals: retractable ID clip

First to recommend

Description

I love my monkey ID clip. These were originally designed for pediatric doctors and nurses who need to have an accessible ID, but want to make the clip child-friendly. When I first got one, everyone at work was jealous, and I still get strangers asking where I got it.

They are fairly sturdy so are worth the higher price than the regular little blue ones that you get as give aways. The ID clips to a retractable string which lets you swipe it through the door security device, or show it to a security guard if necessary. (via Dolbey's Bookstore)

The Eighth Day of Creation: Makers of the Revolution in Biology

First to recommend

Description

Judson's book takes you back to the era of the discovery of the genetic code. This book is a great gift for the biologist in your life, and also something you might want to read if you remember your high school or college biology class well enough.

One of the problems with reading science history is that you know all the punchlines ahead of time. This book manages to suspend your belief and put you into the mindset of the early practitioners of genetics and molecular biology. Those of you interested in really understanding Rosalind Franklin's contribution to the solution of the structure of DNA will also find the book informative; Judson added an additional section on this contraversy to the new edition.

Soap Bubbles: C. V. Boys

First to recommend

Description

Written for the boy scouts in the early 1900's this book is one of the clearest books written about a scientific subject for amateurs. I used this in high school physics class to do a presentation and fell in love with it. Good for anyone age about ten and up. (via My dad)

Pique: DNA Jewelry

First to recommend

Description

As a geek, I approve of most science-themed jewelry items, but a lot of them are campy or just not very nice looking. This series, including necklaces, earrings, and bracelets, available in nickel and silver, is really lovely. You don't even have to be a geek to wear them.

EndNote bibliography software

First to recommend

Description

Endnote means that you don't have to constantly renumber your bibliography. It means that you won't have to type in references. It means that you won't go into a killing rage every time someone mentions the word bibliography in your presence.

It works hand in hand with Microsoft as a plugin and has both Mac and PC versions. If you are a full-time student you can get it at a significant discount.

And it really will reduce the urge to hit your computer.

Sequencher

First to recommend

Description

Sequencher is a sequencing software. It takes your sequence files, trims them and aligns them, and then displays them in an easy to use format. Do you have a base you're not sure of, then you can take a look at the chromatograph merely by hitting a button. Aligning sequence with lots of gaps? It can do it easily.

As they say on their website, "Sequencher is the industry standard."

Another side of Gene Codes is their involvement with remains identification from the World Trade Center. They created new technology to assist with this and continue to do so while shying from media attention. (via Howard Cash)

Hoppy Ice Scraper

First to recommend

Description

I use this in lab to scrape off the ice that accumulates in the -20oC and -80oC freezers. Unlike metal scrapers, you don't have to worry about piercing or scratching your freezer. You won't freeze your hands and you'll be able to finally get the door shut. Other labs come by to borrow this every time they are defrosting. We've had it for a couple of years now with little wear and tear despite regular use on two -80oC and four -20oC freezers.

I'm sure you could use it on your car too if you wanted to.
