Why People Believe Weird Things: Pseudoscience, Superstition, and Other Confusions of Our Time: Michael Shermer,Stephen Jay Goul

Description

Michael Shermer's "Why People Believe Weird Things" is hilarious, educational, critical and gives an excellent summary of how superstition and pseudoscience affects us and what we can do to identify it.

Zombie Escape Plan blank book journal

5 people recommended this item

Description

Everyone needs a zombie escape plan. Have you ever seen a movie where people didn't have one? They end up crawling through windows and wasting valuable time asking their former loved ones "is it you?", "what's wrong?", "do you need an aspirin?" and "why are you chewing on my head?".

Having an escape plan allows you to plan for different scenarios, obtain lists of essential survival gear, and in a pinch, it could be a last resort consumable item.

Granted, you may not have enough time to fill it out before the invasion comes, but at least you'll have a plan, and hopefully a shotgun, and a towel.

Penny Arcade: Portal Tshirt - Slide Forever

First to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

Gabe and Tycho, those brilliantly foul-mouthed chuckleheads capture the unique and wonderful ride of the amazingly original game of Portal (found in The Orange Box).

Portal's a game where you navigate through an inventive, dangerous and challenging environment armed with only a tool that creates portals in the universe. you slide through the portal and end up somewhere else.

It's not as random as it sounds, it's a refreshing change from most point and click games where you position the cursor over the thing you want to make dead.

This Tshirt captures the fun and uniqueness of the game as only the guys at Penny Arcade can. (via Penny Arcade)

Betamax to HD-DVD Converter

3 people recommended this item

Description

Losers of the format wars unite! Literally. In the early to mid 80's, the video format wars crushed Betamax. Despite its superior video quality, you could just cram more "Howard the Duck" or "Enemy Mine" on a VHS.

Fast forward a few more years, but not far enough where you get to the hovercars, you find that BluRay has done the same thing to HD/DVD. I'm not one of the HD/DVD v BluRay fanboys, but the word is out, HD/DVD is done, it lost and they're no longer being made.

Now with this Beta to HD/DVD converter, you can finally transfer one loser format to another. It's simultaneoulsy sad and amazingly cool. It's retro-meets-modern tech. I absolutely love it. (via ThinkGeek)

Darwin '08 - Darwin for President | New York City Skeptics

First to recommend

Description

There have been a precious few people who have attracted my attention this election cycle. However, this is a guy I can totally get behind. He's bright, well traveled, redefined science as we know it and he'd probably pick a superb running mate.

However, there are a few problems.
1: He's British
2: He wont win Kansas or Florida
3: The pundit comedy almost writes itself
4: He's no longer living.

I'd vote for him in a heartbeat! (via NYC Skeptics)

Chemistry Tshirts: Johnny Drinks H2SO4

First to recommend

Description

Johnny was a chemist's son
But Johnny is no more.
What Johnny thought was H2O
Was H2SO4

I love this shirt, it combines the best of dark humor and science geekery. It looks so innocent, and it looks so friendly... and it's always fun when you wear it, the curious and befuddled looks you sometimes get.

You can almost see the hard drive light blinking as they're accessing the high school chemistry files in their brain. Then it hits! OMG Thats sulfuric acid! exothermic in water and one of the strong acids!

It doesnt matter if you think the shirt is funny or just plain wrong... at the very least, its good advice.

Dont Drink Sulfuric Acid. (via ThinkGeek)
