Painting 101 - a list by Kristine

About this list:
I'm one of those who "learn by experience" type of person. Oh yeah, I learned quite a bit of painting a house. It can be painful, but I'm hoping to help the next person go through a little less pain!

Disposable Plastic Paint Tray Liners
First to recommend
Description
The metal trays will not wash well, and you will have way too much to do to remember to wash them immediately. These tray liners are easy to work with, and they can also be used on their own for lighter work.
To avoid discarding too much plastic, I will sometimes line these babies with plastic bags in addition, making the plastic liners reusable. Less plastic in the trash, less pollution, better air.

MINI TRIM ROLLER 3" (PACK OF 12)
First to recommend
Description
Less comfortable, but less plastic. I opted for the all metal mini roller handles because they're used for minimal work, therefore not too uncomfortable to use. Even though they're not disposable, you tend to accidentally toss these (or your helpers will), so you're constantly buying new. The all metal handles is just a tad better for the environment than the all plastic, you know?

Trim Roller Refills

Description
For the cute little trim rollers, but also great for corners and smaller spaces. Buy lots. Great for touch-ups.

9-Inch Paint Roller Frame
First to recommend
Description
You will need about two per painter... Just because for some reason, they hide themselves or they get thrown away because you were too slow removing the foam rollers and they become inseparable. Yeah, speaking from experience, obviously.

Purdy Roller Cover Semi-Smooth
First to recommend
Description
It makes a difference which surface types to buy for. Most interior walls are semi-smooth, so you're good with using these. You can wash these and use them about 3 times, but eventually, you will need to replace. For a single room, you'll need one one package. Plan on a pack a room... So if you're painting your entire house? Let's say... 8 rooms? How about 24 of these babies. Sadly, it's pretty much the number I went through.

Blade Paint Scraper
First to recommend
Description
Make sure to get scrapers with sharp razor blades, because it makes a huge difference when painting around glass.
The cool thing I discovered was painting over the edges of the glass on my metal door frames to seal the windows. However, it means you'll need to scrape the paint off later, which I couldn't do because I had used the incorrect tool! Then I found the razor scraper, and oh, life was better.

3-Foot Aluminum Step Stool
First to recommend
Description
Don't got one? Get one. The 3-step will help make your time more efficient. Rather than go from a 2-step to a full-on ladder, this 3-step stool will be sufficient for most people over 5' tall.

Empty Quart Paint Can
First to recommend
Description
If storage is an issue, then these cans will come in handy. You will have lots of left-over paint, and potentially, in many different shades (oh, you will go through a period of selecting the worst colors imaginable).
It's important, actually, to keep about a quart of extra paint. For the dings and scratches that need touch-ups in months to come. The quart size cans take much less space, and because it will have less air inside, your paint will maintain longer.
Plus, I simply like clean cans, labeled nicely with paint color and the room it beongs to.

Scott Shop Towels
First to recommend
Description
Paper towels that work like cloths. I try to avoid non-reusable supplies, but somethings are unavoidable. Once a rag is stained with paint and oil and muck, all at one time... it's a throw-away. Better to toss paper than fabric rags. One of these sheets will do a lot, so you use less than you would regular paper towels.

Contractor Bags
First to recommend
Description
Avoid a real big mess and get bags that can hold a lot of weight. They are heavy-duty and large, which makes cleaning up so much more pleasant. Nothing is worse than having to garbage the garbage over and over again.
