teapots - a list by Kristine

About this list:

I was working on a project requiring lots of tear sheets. I started noticing lots of teapots with modern-Asian interpretations, especially in how the pattern is applied to the pot. These pots remind me of teatime at the Penninsula Hotel, which was one of my favorite activities when visiting Hong Kong.

Wow. How GORGEOUS is this teapot? Everything about this pot is so well designed, including Asianera's intentional use of traditional graphic and color, yet they still maintain their modern point of view. This is a beautiful product.

christian tortu teapot

Description

I am cheating. This is actually the Christian Tortu coffee pot for Rosanthal. I like this tall shape so much better than the squatty round ones (which are nice, but you can only take so much of it) (see my teapot list and you'll understand). I'm sure there's some kind of tea-sacrilige rule against serving tea in a tall pot, and I've been damned by the tea gods. Would be just my luck.

This Bordo Sperlein's teapot is so lovely. The shape of the pot is unique, and reminds me a bit of the duck decanter commonly seen in Italy. The cherry branch makes this a very modern looking teapot.

Crate and Barrel plum blossom teapot

Description

Crate and Barrel's nice version of the debossed flower teapot. Sweet without drowning in it. I love all the new modern-Asian styled teapots that's out there right now, from $19.99 to $499.99.

mikasa pure red teapot

Description

I normally am not a fan of Mikasa, but I really do like this teapot. The modern intepretation of Asian floral pattern is beautiful. Bright red on stark white makes it very modern, but in its classic world.

villeroy and boch "the vert" teapot

First to recommend

Description

Usually I tend to steer away from modern interpretations of antiques, in particular Asian antiques. I think Villeroy and Boch did okay with these "green tea" teapots. The bright colors make the design intentional, hence one can't mistaken it for a bad knock-off. I love the yellow/green teapot with the detailed handle. How fabulous to serve these individually at teatime?

raynaud metamorphosis teapot

First to recommend

Description

I love it that it's called metamorphosis, though how it relates to this pot other than the complete butterfly, I'm not quite sure. I like the fact it is a hybrid of teapot and coffee pot. It's surprising Raynaud would design something so informal. (Quick breath, hand to mouth with a shocked look.)

my china rim emperor

Description

This Sieger teapot is gorgeous, but I wish they matched it with the plates, which are bright blue with red floral pattern. The gold handle makes it a luxury item, and you know, it doesn't look bad at all.

An Alberto Pinto creation for Raynaud. The red coral pattern on the dishes are unbelievable. Love the small red knob detail on the lid.

Description

I've always been attracted to leafless tree graphic. Reminds me of the "tree of life" concept. This pot is by Dibbern. Made of fine bone china in Germany. Very simple and elegant design.
