Barnes and Noble: The Hunting of the Snark - An Agony, in Eight Fits by Lewis Carroll
First to recommend
Description
Snark, the omnipresent sarcasm pervading politics, news and comedy of late, is (perhaps not surprisingly) neither a new word nor a new phenomenon. Lewis Carroll, author of "Through the Looking Glass," creator of beloved, hapless Alice, wrote an "agony" of considerable heft nearly 200 years ago.
The seventh "fit" details the "Banker's Fate . . . and so we have come full circle, to a time when this seemingly babbling brook of words becomes incredibly relevant to our present-day circumstances. As they say, you can either laugh or cry.

Take your stress level down a notch or two with this suave blend of #electronica, #trance and world music. The band names alone ("Bassnectar," "Spaceflight Orchestra," "Cosmic Rocker") will provide a psychic escape.

Amazon: Sanity Savers - Tips for Women to Live a Balanced Life by Dale Vicky Atkins and Barbara Scala
First to recommend
Description
"A balanced life" has proven to be an oxymoron for me, but that doesn't mean I cannot have more #sanity in the mix. This book is not a quick fix. It is a way of re-framing the conditions of your life so that there is less shame and blame and woe . . . and more joy for everyone, including you. (And I am confident that this will work just as well for men as for women.)

Barnes and Noble: Nine Lives by Dan Baum
First to recommend
Description
Only nine people out of the thousands of New Orleans residents are covered in this deeply moving book. Yet, these nine lives provide the inside story about the singularity of the place and its people . . . and finally attaches a face and a voice to the collective soul of the victims sandwiched between two #hurricanes Betsy and Katrina.

Barnes and Noble: The Inaugural Address, 2009 by Barack Obama
First to recommend
Description
Even on the joyous occasion of his #inauguration, when the Washington Mall was overflowing with the celebratory spirit of thousands of people, Obama spoke to the enormous work ahead of him. This book, including the words of Obama, Lincoln and Thoreau, is an inextinguishable flame for all those who have united in hope for a brighter, cleaner, safer future.

iTunes Store: Down to Earth by Peter Gabriel (From "WALL•E")

Description
Pure Peter Gabriel, this song picks you up, dusts you off and smoothes over all the rough edges of the day. And, as is the movie for best animated picture, this song is my pick for best song at tonight's Academy Awards. Gotta love the big-hearted underdog.

Barnes and Noble: Moral Clarity - A Guide for Grown-Up Idealists by Susan Neiman
First to recommend
Description
As a philosophy major (yes, we still exist), I learned that it is not enough to simply feel in your bones that something is good or right. You must be able to back it up with a compelling argument: a substantive succession of arguments. Within this book, geared to people who do not necessarily have a background in philosophy, Neiman creates a foundation for optimists to build upon . . . and then hopefully expand upon in daily life. This is a true antidote to skepticism: the great pull we all feel to give up and give in to the negative forces at work in our world.

Amazon: Blown Sideways Through Life - A Hilarious Tour de Resume by Claudia Shear
First to recommend
Description
I was actually lucky enough to see Claudia Shear perform the stage production of this book during its sadly brief Off-Broadway run. But the book. Oh, the book. It is a soul-bearing, heart-breaking triumph of a story, of a life lived boldly, though not always joyously and only intermittently with confidence. That she gains her stride by embracing herself is the simple - and incredibly difficult - secret to her success.
