Hotspot Olympic Torch
First to recommend
Description
If you want to get into the Olympic spirit while buying something that might possibly have a practical use, check out this Olympic torch. You can parade around your house while your friends "protest", and when the Olympics are over you'll still have a very nice tiki torch.

New Balance 992 running shoe
2 people recommended this item
Description
These are pretty much the best, most comfortable running shoes you can get. I got my first pair for Christmas last year, and I'm hooked and will probably only buy these in the future.
They are expensive, but if you run a fair amount, your feet will thank you. Far more comfortable than the relatively cheap running shoes I used to wear.

Marmot PreCip Jacket For Men
First to recommend
Description
This lightweight, waterproof/breathable and windproof jacket (or shell) has been a staple of my hiking and skiing trips for years. Just add layers underneath depending on the weather (and avoid cotton), and you'll be prepared for most conditions.
Marmot makes quality gear that's not super expensive (these jackets are typically on sale for around $100). This jacket plus long sleeve layers underneath will work just as well as a heavier, more expensive jacket, and will be more versatile for warmer weather as well.

Therm-a-Rest

Description
Light, compact, and comfortable. Self inflating - these are much better than older style foam or bulky inflatable mats. They sell 3 styles of self inflating mattresses - this is the medium weight/bulk version that I use.

EMS Men's Techwick Short-Sleeve T-Shirt
First to recommend
Description
If you're doing any active outdoor activity, you don't want to wear a regular cotton t-shirt. This type of shirt will help keep you dry when running, hiking, biking, skiing, etc. I'm starting to like these so much that I wear them as everyday clothes as well. Now if we could just pair this fabric with some smart-aleck or geeky sayings... (via Mom)

EMS Mountaineer Trekking Poles
First to recommend
Description
When I first heard about trekking poles, I thought they were for old people and/or wimps. But after doing 10+ mile mountain hikes both with and without them, I know that they can make your hike a lot more pleasant, especially on the way down.
If you don't often go on long hikes, you may want to rent instead of buying. You can rent these for a weekend from Sports Chalet (and probably other places) for less than $20.

Vasque - Sundowner Brown GTX - Mens
First to recommend
Description
When I was researching hiking boots, I read a lot of magazine reviews that basically said these were the best, most durable all around hiking boots you could buy. That was almost 10 years ago, and my pair has never dissappointed.

Platypus Big Zip II Reservoir - 3 Liter
First to recommend
Description
These are really convenient for hiking, since you don't have to stop, remove your pack, find your water, or put your pack back on. I like this one because it's 3 liters and is easy to put water in and clean. I recommend having 2 for long hikes, so you don't have to stop to refill much.

Kelty Moraine Pack
First to recommend
Description
Kelty packs last forever. I got this one a couple of years ago (after my previous one got stolen), and use it for day hikes and weekend backpacking trips. As long as you get the right size for you and adjust it properly, they're very comfortable.
This one also has little holes on the sides for your hydration tubes, so you don't need a separate CamelBack bag.
