THE FRATELLIS

Description
I thought they had me with their first single 'Chelsea Dagger' and being from Glasgow. Then I saw their video for 'Flathead'. Pin-up girls? I think I'm in love.

Songs For the Young At Heart
First to recommend
Description
Like the films of Guillermo del Toro and the stories of Roald Dahl, Songs For the Young At Heart is whimsical and magical while being poignant and oh-so-slightly sinister. When I was a kid, Puff the Magic Dragon used to make me so sad but that made me love it more! It's a reminder of what childhood is and was - that purity and innocence - but with an edge, so it works for you, your parents and your kids.

Mika - Life in Cartoon Motion
First to recommend
Description
Deservedly, Mika's first single "Grace Kelly" is being imprinted on the brains of the public by savvy media types like the British press and Perez Hilton. Mika's operatic falsetto is gloriously over-the-top and with that alone he stands out far above the rest of pop music on the radio today. With his playful sound, in-your-face exuberance and ear for catchy hooks, Mika's songs are on the path to being those you hum without realising it.
It's only available as an import in North America at the moment, but I say it's worth it to tell your friends you heard of it long before the radio stations played it to death! (via mikasounds.com)

St. Elsewhere: Gnarls Barkley
11 people recommended this item
Description
Just in case you were in orbit or on a deserted island for the last year you probably heard "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley more than once. Made up of uber-innovative producer Danger Mouse and equally inventive soul vocalist Cee-Loo, Gnarls Barkley took modern music to a new level in 2006 that no one else has come close to reaching.
It's playful, compelling and like nothing you've heard before. (via gnarlsbarkley.com)

Sloan - A Sides Win

Description
Sloan's album Twice Removed, released in 1994, was famously named "The Best Canadian Album of All Time" by Chart Attack magazine. Many scoffed at the fledging East Coast quartet's album being placed higher than any by Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Rush or The Tragically Hip but now, over ten years later, they're still churning out the same fantastic easy, sunny indie power pop/rock and they're front-runners for the title of "The Best Canadian Band of All Time".
A Sides Win is a collection of their singles from 1992 to 2005 and it's PACKED with ear candy goodness. You've probably never heard of Sloan if you're not Canadian (if you are you've already got this in your CD collection, I know) and haven't you been in the dark long enough? (via sloanmusic.com)

The Kooks - Inside In/Inside Out

Description
The Kooks have an unmistakenly British, modern sound and make it seem effortless. Do you know how you can tell? Turn it up loud while you're driving fast with your windows down. You won't even consider slowing down until the CD is finished. (via thekooks.co.uk)

Wincing the Night Away by The Shins

Description
Like many I fell for the sweet, quirky sounds of The Shins thanks to Zach Braff, Natalie Portman and a little film called Garden State. In love with their first two albums, my anticipation for their third album was high, and I'm happy to report it doesn't disappoint!
A little gentler, more haunted and pretty close to "epic" The Shins continue to weave their spell. They might not change your life, but they'll certainly make it more melodic. (via theshins.com)

His & Hers - Various Artists
First to recommend
Description
This is like someone made me a Valentine's (or birthday, or anniversary, or just 'cause I like you) mix! There are six of my favourite (and I mean all-time favourite) songs on this, and most of the artists I'd count among my favourites as well. Ryan Adam's cover of "Wonderwall", The Sounds' "Rock N Roll" and The Stereophonics' "Dakota" are worth the price of the album alone.
Buy this for your alt-minded sweetie or someone alt- minded you want to make your sweetie, and buy one for yourself while you're at it!

Jarvis Cocker - The Jarvis Cocker Album

Description
Intelligent, observant, eccentric, romantic. He's still singing songs about girls who deserve so much better than they think they do and what girl couldn't use a man like that in their lives? It's been over ten years now and I still have a massive crush on him! (via myspace.com)
