An amazingly strong album from one of the best riot grrl groups around. Terrific rock riffs and tons of power, this is a modern punk rock powerhouse record.

American Idiot: Green Day

Description

Green Day grows up. Great album with hooky, catchy songs filled with smart lyrics. Definitely in the rock-opera vein, with some songs clocking in at over 9mn, but none of them ever feel bloated. Energetic and edgy rock'n'roll.

When Your Heart Stops Beating: (+44)

First to recommend

Description

Pop-punk band Blink 182 broke up 2005. While Tom DeLonge going on to Angles & Airwaves, it took the other two members Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker a little bit more time to put together a new outfit. +44 is definitely in the same vein as Blink-182, catchy pop-punk songs. Although some of the songs here are a bit darker, making you wonder if they're exorcising some of their resentment towards their former bandmate.

The Future Is Unwritten: Joe Strummer

Description

The soundtrack to Jullien Temple's movie about Joe Strummer plays like a great mixtape made by your coolest friend. There's some Clash, some Strummer in his post-Clash bands, and a smattering of other great artists. Great compilation.

Pink Flag: Wire

First to recommend

Description

This is a crazy good album. And the most insane thing is the number of songs in the amount of time there is in the album. 23 songs in 39mn. 6 songs clock in at under 1mn and 10 of them don't break the 2mn mark.. They're incredibly energetic bits of punk, but on the poppier side of punk rather than rawer. All angular guitars and half-shouty lyrics.

154: Wire

First to recommend

Description

The third Wire album, and the last in the cycle of their amazing 70s albums. Released to wide critical acclaim, it marks probably the height of both their popularity and creative zenith. Filled with amazing post-punk songs, all now over 2mn in length, Wire had arrived.

Chairs Missing: Wire

First to recommend

Description

Wire makes amazing punk (or maybe just slightly post-punk) music. Some of it is almost popy in it's catchiness and charm, but there's still plenty of energy to spare. The songs are still angular, edgy and fascinating, although many of them are "long" by Wire standards.

And Out Come the Wolves: Rancid

First to recommend

Description

I remember the first time I heard "Timebomb" and "Ruby Soho". I was starting high school and didn't know they made music like this. It was a revelation. It was catchy and raw, full of angry energy and aggressive guitars. This album introduced me to the wonderful world of punk and it still holds up really well over 10 years later. One of the few records I have held onto from those days.

Indestructible: Rancid: Music

Description

This album totally recalls the energy and osound of And Out Come The Wolves. "Fall Back Down", and "Red Hot Moon" are infectious. Great, vital punk rock.

White Light, White Heat, White Trash: Social Distortion

First to recommend

Description

Referencing, and possibly poking fun of, the Velvet Underground in the title, this Social D album returns to a harder, more punk sound. For me, the best song is "Dear Lover", and the strange, hardcore cover of the Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb"
