Good punk albums from then and now. Bad spelling courtesy of Persepolis :)

Under the Influences: Mike Ness

Description
All covers record by Mike Ness of Social Distortion. From country to folk, and a cover of "I Fought the Law" thrown in for good luck. It shows how deep he mines and how broad the scope of the influences that go into Social D's sound.

Mommy's Little Monster: Social Distortion
First to recommend
Description
Debut album from Social D, this is a kicking punk album with attitude to spare. Tons of aggressive guitars, with lots of energy and swagger. Key tracks: "The Creeps" and "Mommy's Little Monster" (although for my money, the version off of Live at the Roxy manages to pack in even more energy and bravado)

Prison Bound: Social Distortion
First to recommend
Description
Social D's second album finds them kicking out some more good punk, but starting down the road of cowpunk or country punk, introducing some more honky tonk elements into the songs, notably on the album's title track

Mainliner: Wreckage From the Past: Social Distortion

Description
Mostly contains demos and alternate versions of songs, it also includes the songs off of the single they released prior to Mommy's Little Monster. Definitely in more of the hardcore vein than their country/punk sound.

Cheating at Solitaire: Mike Ness
First to recommend
Description
Mike Ness, frontman of SoCal punk outfit Social D, goes solo to record some of his more country and straight-up rock and roll songs. Definitely has a more old-time feel than a Social D record, and certainly a different kind of energy. It's a kinder, gentler Mike Ness. Key track "The Devil in Miss Jones"

A Poet's Life: Tim Armstrong
First to recommend
Description
A looser affair than most Rancid album, this finds Tim Armstrong in generally good spirits. Many songs are more upbeat with a kind of reggae influenced beat. There's almost a surf sound on "Take This City" "Into Action", which is a much bubbly song than you'd expect to find here."Translator" sounds a bit like a Transplants song with a more relaxed, stripped down backing. Even the songs with darker overtones are lighter than anything else he's produced. The delivery is as you'd expect, in his singular diction, but it's a stripped down.

Suicide (First Album): Suicide
First to recommend
Description
I'm not sure exactly how to characterize Suicide's sound. It's like droning punk, with drum machines, synthesizers but with the same in your face aggression of the punk movement. They were known for being very combative with their audience, as you can hear from the live tracks. And then there's "23 Minutes over Brussels," which is literally almost 23 minutes long. That kind of length is in direct opposition to the brief, catchy songs of the punk movements, and other bands that came from the same scene, like the New York Dolls.

Suicide (second album + bonus disc): Suicide
First to recommend
Description
Alan Vega and Martin Rev made some strange but compelling music. This set includes the second album, plus unreleased demos and rehearsal tapes. The first time I heard a Suicide song was Bruce Springsteen covering "Dream Baby Dream". Such a simple song, with droning vocals, but when Suicide does it, there's something really raw about it. Great songs though, from a couple of real unique characters in music.

Bad Reputation: Joan Jett
First to recommend
Description
Her first abum post-runaways sees Joan Jett with attitude to spare, making a rocking album with tons of energy. Led off by the great single "Bed Reputation" this album doesn't let up with lots of raw energy and hooks songs.

Inflammable Material: Stiff Little Fingers

Description
Great Irish Punk album. "Suspect Device" should be a classic punk hit, although it's much overlooked. I saw these guys just the other year, and even as aging punk heroes, they could seriously bring the power and passion.
