La Vita Italiana - a list by Andrea

About this list:

The Euro is higher than the hemlines this summer, and with burgeoning industry, healthy diets, and public transportation as chic and affordable as ever, let's face it: Europeans are living better than we are. But fear not: I've just returned from the continent - Italy, specifically - and I've picked up some key pieces that make life stateside a tad bit easier, Mediterranean style.

Description

There's a certain charm to orthopedic-type shoes, plus these ones look like something an Italian woman wears bicycling, which is essentially my only criteria for buying shoes. ($200 at zappos.com)

Baguette Computer Wrist Rest

Description

What's great about this is how many directions it can be taken. In a crappy railroad with a carpet of cigarette butts, it adds to a general air of excess and negligence and too-old food. In an adorable railroad (am I placing my income level too specifically?) with mod touches and posters of "Breathless", it adds to a general air of cute French-girlness. In a bachelor pad on a mahogony desk, it gives you a nicely eccentric but wealthy Howard Hughes feeling. The possibilities! ($14.95 at Solutions.com)

Karen Walker Floral Print Day Dress

First to recommend

Description

This is one of those dresses that makes you feel dynamite every time you put it on, because you know you look instantly sexy, put together, and ready for anything. The floral panel and cinching gives a slimming curve, the deep muted tones are sophisticated, and the gold accents make it irresistible. I want it!

Picture yourself flying across the Tuscan countryside on a bicycle just after dawn, sun-kissed hair flying behind you, sunglasses perched on your nose just so, and a book by Calvino in your little rucksack (yes, rucksack). You know what you'd have on your feet? (now $99 at Bird)

Bialetti 06799 Moka Express stovetop espresso maker, 3 cup.

Description

Who says Europeans live better than Americans? Well, they say so - a lot - but I kind of have to sheepishly agree. I mean, health care and education systems aside, have you seen Italian espresso machines? They're small, cheap, portable and brew a better macchiato than your hulky electric device that breaks after two years and cost you a month's rent - and the zinger is, they've had them since seriously forever. Invented in 1933 by an Italian who no doubt took his espresso very seriously, these chic little aluminum pieces give your fifth floor walk-up one bedroom that Heiress-Slumming-It je ne sais quois - as opposed to the dreaded Post-Grad-Winging-It grunge.
