DIY Weekend: Making an Upholstered Headboard - a list by LaurenMessiah

About this list:
I have been searching for the perfect headboard for years now. All of the ones I have found have either been too expensive or less than perfect (mostly too expensive.) For about $200 I made a headboard. It took a little craftiness, some (okay lots) help from Dad, and about 6 hours. The end result is fantastic. Check out the finished product here http://ask-fashion-kitty.blogspot.com/2009/05/diy-weekend-upholstered-headboard.html

Description
You might be surprised to see a jigsaw recommendation by me but after the hours that I have spent in Home Depot this past week ... I'm not surprised. That's right, FashionKItty is handy and can handle her business with the proper power tools. I used this baby to build a headboard this weekend. Yep, I've got skillz (with a lot of help of course.)

Description
When I made my lovely upholstered headboard this past weekend, I didn't have an staple gun so I opted for tacks instead. They went into the wood pretty easily and if I couldn't push it all the way in, a little tap with the hammer did the job just fine.

How did I ever live without a drill? Well, clearly I did but now that I own a drill i think my life will be just a smidge better. This came in really handy when making my bomb-ass headboard.

Dritz Doll Needles Asstorted Sizes - 5/Pkg : Hand Needles : Pins & Needles : Sewing & Quilting

Description
When it was time for me to do the tufting on my headboard, I realized that the needles I had just wouldn't cut. I did have to take the needle through a piece of wood (drilled the hole), 5 inches of batting, and a piece of fabric to sew on the button. So I headed out to find a longer needle. I thought I would end up buying an upholstery needle but these dolls needles were better. They are really long sturdy. Made that tufting a snap.

Can't make an upholstered headboard without some batting. I got enough to fold it in half to make it extra padded.

A little rope trim adds just enough drama to your headboard. I went with a fold and white braided trim for mine.

Description
I went with a fancier button, kind of like this one, for the tufting on my headboard. It will be easy to change out the button later if I want a new look.

Rodanthe Pearl Fabric

Description
I got 4 yards of fabric (not this exact fabric) for my headboard. I went with a strong upholstery fabric in a cream color. The fabric is a kind of velour that is really soft to the touch and hopefully easy to clean if it get dirty.

Description
I used black spray paint to give my headboard a finished look. So much easier than using a brush.
