Parent Hacks: Real-world parenting tips from real parents

First to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

This is where the Web is headed -- at least where parents are concerned: parenting tips by parents, for parents, about what really works with kids.

I'm a huge fan of the site. I love its down-to-earth philosophy and its grassroots style.

You won't find any experts pontificating from on high here (thankfully).

It's all about parents sharing their best "hacks" (solutions) to the problem du jour. That can be anything from getting kids to sleep, to dealing with mealtime madness, to tackling toilet training, to navigating the baby products aisle. (I'm only just touching on the range of "hacks" you'll find at this one-of-a-kind parenting site. You have to check it out for yourself to truly "get" Parent Hacks. (via The Mother of All Lenses)

The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation

Description

You've heard about the concept of "random acts of kindness," but you might not realize that there's a website -- and a foundation -- devoted to encouraging acts of kindness in the world. The best thing about this site is the fact that it's loaded with practical tips and ideas, including classroom resources and downloads galore (see http://www.actsofkindness.org
/inspiration/download.asp) that are useful and inspiring. Highly recommended.

New American Dream

First to recommend

Description

The Center for a New American Dream provides practical advice on living consciously (according to your values), buying wisely (buying "green" whenever possible and trying not to get sucked into the vortex of overconsumption) and joining with others who share your commitment to working towards a new American dream. (Remember the old one? It was all about acquiring more "stuff.")

The Center publishes great tips for parents, including a free downloadable guide entitled "Tips for Parenting in a Commercial Culture." The guide makes a terrific read at back-to-school time and during the holiday season, when your kid is likely to have a particularly difficult time differentiating between the "frills" and the "essentials." Description

This website is designed to get teens thinking about consumerism, the environment, social justice, and other important issues. It's a project of the Center for a New American Dream and the World Wildlife Fund. According to a stat posted on the site, if just one out of every ten middle and high school students each bought just one recycled notebook this year, that single action would save over 60,000 trees, conserve 25.5 million gallons of water, and stop 5,250,000 pounds of global warming gases from being released. That, in a nutshell, is what the site is all about -- encouraging small actions at the individual level that could add up to big changes for the planet. (via Center for a New American Dream)

Doulas

First to recommend

Description

Doulas are a laboring (or new mother's) best friend. This page from the DONA International website makes the case for doula care. As the website points out, a growing body of research shows that the use of a doula has clear benefits for families during childbirth and postpartum, with no known risks. Conceive Magazine

Description

Conceive Magazine is the first mainstream magazine to focus on parents-to-be -- couples who are trying to achieve a pregnancy. It's smart, savvy, and informative and tuned into the issues that are of greatest concern to parents-to-be. The magazine recently launched an Internet radio show through Voice of America and it was recently named one of the country's 50 best magazines by The Chicago Tribune. I am a regular contributor to Conceive Magazine. In addition to writing features (my most recent was on preconception health), I write the magazine's "Misconceptions column" -- the column on the very last page of the magazine that tackles common myths about getting pregnant. Canadian Family: Decoding Baby Body Language

First to recommend

Description

Canadian Family magazine recently underwent a design and editorial makeover. The "new" Canadian Family is really in touch with what Canadian parents want -- practical tips, fun-to-read articles, and non-bossy advice. I have had the opportunity to write a few articles for the magazine (e.g., this article on reading your baby's body language) and have been really impressed with the publication's new editorial direction. If you haven't looked at the magazine recently, you might want to check it out.

Breastfeeding Made Simple: Seven Natural Laws for Nursing Mothers

First to recommend

Description

I purchased this book while researching the breastfeeding chapter in one of my recent books. I immediately fell in love with this book -- specifically, with its innovative approach to the material (the seven natural laws) and its warm, supportive, and mother-friendly tone. The authors do a terrific job of explaining the root causes of many common breastfeeding problems in ways that make so much sense. Their section on how taking a "left-brained" approach to the very "right-brained" act of breastfeeding is totally brilliant. I can't praise this book highly enough. (via Amazon.com)
