Canadian Family: Get More ZZZs

Description
It's easy for "the bill chill" to set in between you and your partner when neither of you is getting enough sleep -- situation normal when there's a new baby in your life. Rather than keeping score about whose turn it is to get up in the night with the baby, "Think of your parental energy as a pooled asset. That way you'll see each other's naps and breaks as something that's good for you both. This fresh perspective should lead to less tossing and turning and, as the chill begins to leave the bedroom, some very good nights for you both." (Read more) (via Baby Sleep Solutions)

The Secrets of Sleep-Savvy Moms

Description
See this tip:
"1. Balance the need to stay home so your child can nap against your need to avoid cabin fever.
You can quickly develop a case of cabin fever if you feel like you're trapped in the sleep-deprivation zone 24/7."
While you don't want your child to miss his naps all the time, sometimes getting to your mom's group one afternoon a week is such an important pick-me-up for you that you're willing to deal with any temporary fallout from your child's disrupted nap schedule. (Sometimes we get into really black-and-white thinking -- and a lot of guilt -- when it comes to kids and sleep. We talk about babies being "good" and "bad" sleepers -- and we beat ourselves up because we didn't follow a particular sleep program to a -- but rather trust our mother instincts instead. Candela Rechargeable Aqua Lamps

Description
These make a terrific baby gift for new parents. They can be used as a combination night-light and flashlight -- providing just enough of a middle-of-the-night glow to light the way to baby's room in the middle of the night. They also work well in baby's room because they don't get overly hot and they don't rely on electricity for power, so there aren't any electrical cords to worry about. They're a top-selling item in gift shop at the parenting center where I offer many of my parenting workshops and a number of parents that I interviewed for one of my recent books recommended them as a middle-of-the-night essential for parents with night-waking babies. Canadian Family: Decoding Baby Body Language

Description
Canadian Family magazine recently underwent a design and editorial makeover. The "new" Canadian Family is really in touch with what Canadian parents want -- practical tips, fun-to-read articles, and non-bossy advice. I have had the opportunity to write a few articles for the magazine (e.g., this article on reading your baby's body language) and have been really impressed with the publication's new editorial direction. If you haven't looked at the magazine recently, you might want to check it out.

Breastfeeding Made Simple: Seven Natural Laws for Nursing Mothers
First to recommend
Description
I purchased this book while researching the breastfeeding chapter in one of my recent books. I immediately fell in love with this book -- specifically, with its innovative approach to the material (the seven natural laws) and its warm, supportive, and mother-friendly tone. The authors do a terrific job of explaining the root causes of many common breastfeeding problems in ways that make so much sense. Their section on how taking a "left-brained" approach to the very "right-brained" act of breastfeeding is totally brilliant. I can't praise this book highly enough. (via Amazon.com)

Description
This is a collection of eight half hour audio programs in a 4-CD set. Each CD is packaged with a booklet containing descriptions of the shows and performers, written and illustrated by host and producer Nanci Olesen. You can buy a single volume or the whole set. (Naturally, more is better!) I'm one of the women featured on the first CD (the one about pregnancy and newborn shock). Nanci and I talk about the ups and downs of each of the three trimesters.

The Mother of All Books Series
First to recommend
Description
These books are more than just books to me. They kind of feel like my "babies" because giving birth to each of these babies is truly a labor of love -- with equal emphasis on "labor" and "love." (I just about drive myself and my family crazy during each "book pregnancy.") There are American and Canadian editions of these books -- this series page @ Amazon.com only lists the US editions, but a quick search at Amazon.ca will pull up the Canadian editions instead.
And this page doesn't list the two new books in the spin-off "The Mother of All Solutions" series: Sleep Solutions for Your Baby, Toddler, and Preschooler and Mealtime Solutions for Your Baby, Toddler, and Preschooler -- I guess because they're in a separate series.
The books wouldn't be here at all if it weren't for the hundreds of parents who served on the research panels for the books over the years, providing input on what moms (and dads) really want to know about pregnancy, babies, toddlers, and parenting. I owe them a huge debt of gratitude.
