Smart Strip Power Strip w/ Fax & Modem Protection - LCG4

2 people recommended this item

Description

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 75% of all the electricity consumed in the home is standby power used to keep electronics running when those TVs, DVRs, computers, monitors and stereos are "off." The average desktop computer, not including the monitor, consumes from 60 to 250 watts a day. Compared with a machine left on 24/7, a computer that is in use four hours a day and turned off the rest of the time would save you about $70 a year. The carbon impact would be even greater. Shutting it off would reduce the machine's CO2 emissions 83%, to just 63 kg a year.

Burt's Bees Rosemary Mint Shampoo Bar

First to recommend

Description

Any product from Burt's Bees is good, but I specifically like their Rosemary Mint Shampoo Bar. One cool thing about Burt's is that they always tell you in plain terms what's in their products. One thing they don't have is sodium lauryl sulfate, a corrosive, irritating additive used in engine degreasers.

Bison Brewing Chocolate Stout

Description

Bison is an organic brewery located here in Berkeley, and their chocolate stout is one of my favorites. It's not a light summer beer, but in general, I'm much more likely to enjoy a cold beer on a beautiful summer Saturday. This is one of my top choices. If you've never tried a local brewery, you're missing out.

Garden's Alive Sting Free

Description

DEET-free insect repellents don't have the best reputation, but this is the most effective one I've found. I never head up to the Sierras in the summer without this stuff.

Ecoconscious Brown Organic Cotton Hoodie

First to recommend

Description

This might not be a summer item for you, but it gets chilly at night in the Bay Area. When we needed some apparel for our staff, these fit the bill nicely. If you've never felt an organic cotton sweatshirt or tee, you're missing out; it's the softest, most comfortable clothing I own.

Marin Sun Farms All-natural Grass-fed Beef

First to recommend

Description

I may run a 'green' company, but half of my extended family are cattle ranchers, so I'm not going vegan any time soon. But eating meat doesn't have to mean eating blindly. When I see a fast-food burger, I see a cow that was force-fed an unnatural diet. So for my summer grilling needs, I head down to one of the shops around Berkeley that carries local grass-fed beef. Many sustainable farms like Marin Sun also sell their products through the mail or on the internet.
