iViva Canadiana! - a list by nanashi

About this list:
Most of us already know that Canadians aren't actually squares. It's a front. For those who haven't yet figured it out, let me break it down for you: the innocence; the obsession with hockey; the cotton-poly blend t-shirts; all that maple syrup- it's all lies! Canada is one big sub-culture within a culture. Secretly, kick-ass goods that would never be discovered in shops frequented by tourists are being produced by hundreds of talented, indie artists. Seriously! This list is just a taste.

Fluevog Shoes: Yunnan Teapot Heel
First to recommend
Description
These shoes would go perfectly with jam scones and a spot of tea. How charmingly delicate the ribbons are! And, oh! isn't the scalloped leather just darling!
No, these Fluevog shoes aren't anything like the punk-rockish "dare-to-be-different" shoes of Fluevog past, but yes, the intricate detailing and colour palette still screams "I mean business"!

Worn Fashion Journal » Worn Fashion Journal - Issue no.5
First to recommend
Description
When I imagine the perfect fashion magazine, I combine Nylon's diverse content, Metropop's superb layout, Frankie's incredibly readable columns, and Wallpaper's well choreographed photo-shoots.
Well, tough shit- there could never be a magazine that perfect.
Shortly thereafter I purchased a pack of three back issues of Toronto-based indie mag Worn Fashion Journal. The articles covered everything from the Psychobilly music movement to the history of Toile (yes- like the fabric). Though I admit I wasn't always completely engrossed with the content, I found that the opinions were (or at least seemed) genuine, not assumed for the purpose of the article. The photo shoots were unique and artsy- and although sometimes I got the impression that someone had gone a little crazy with Photoshop, the trial-and-error theatrics of it all had an overall appealing effect.
Where other magazines have fallen short, however, Worn excelled. Most of the fashion illustration is not to be matched! The artists profiled were so first-rate I was surprised that I hadn't heard of a single one of them.
So, as one might deduce:
no. 1: brevity is not my friend and
no. 2: Worn fashion journal isn't perfect, but all of those little flaws that distinguishes an indie publication makes Worn, somehow, better than perfect.

goodEGG Industries - Kissy Cocktail Napkins
First to recommend
Description
Oh dear, someone's forgot to replace the napkins...
I really love these cocktail napkins. Far more than I've ever loved any napkin before. Ever. Not that that's saying much. Each cotton/poly sheet comes with a kissing print on it (a heat transfer, through I did initially wonder how it was done). Very scandalous.

Handmade Jewelry on Etsy - Antler Ring, Moose by touchthedutch

Description
I've lived in Canada all my life and have never before seen a moose.
This, I don't mind, because as far as I'm concerned moose are grouchy, scary, hairy monsters that I certainly wouldn't want walking around my neighborhood.
I am, however, quite fond of the charming moose-y motifs that artist Allison Wells uses in her distinctly Canadian jewelry. This Chechen wood ring, for example, encompasses all the charm and quirky elegance moose are supposed to possess without all the scary, hairiness of the real thing.
