In this year the first Trabant has been produced and delivered by the VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau. In the following years the Trabant became the most important type of car in the GDR. Between 1957 and 1991 more than 3 million Trabants have been produced and delivered. For many people the car became not only a proverbial companion, but also a friend and member of the family.
Even today the so called Trabi is a very popular cult-object."
