Jean De Florette / Manon of the Spring (MGM World Films)

Description

The French one the whole seem to produce some outstanding films. This pair is representative of that. I won't bore you here with a break down of the plots or story lines. I'll just say that these films are unforgettable, compelling and modern masterpieces (especially the first --- the second is "the revenge film").

If you like happy-go-lucky movies that evaporate from your thoughts as soon as the credits roll, you may as well look elsewhere. If you appreciate films of dimension that are rich, no matter what their final commentary is on human nature, then you will love these. They should be seen together as complements. (via amazon.com)

Master of the Flying Guillotine

First to recommend

Description

I saw this movie at the drive-in when I was about 4 years old. I wasn't supposed to be watching. I was allegedly asleep in the back seat. However, it was so trippy and so out-of-hand that it left a huge impression on me. I know, not hard to do to a 4-year-old. But some of the things I remembered just seemed too outlandish to be going on in a martial arts movie. When I became an adult I tracked down a copy and everything I recalled and more was in the film! It's total kitch, hilarious and bad, but you will be clapping by the end of it. It has to be seen to be believed!

Introducing what many consider the Holy Grail of 1970's martial arts/Hong Kong films. Master of the Flying Guillotine (also known as One Armed Boxer vs. The Flying Guillotine) combines eye-popping visuals, unforgettable characters, incredible performances, a spectacular electronic soundtrack and one of the most notorious weapons in film history. The cult and legend of Master of the Flying Guillotine continues to grow as martial arts film moves into the mainstream. Both Quentin Tarantino and Samuel L. Jackson single out "Master" as one of their favorite films. (via target.com)

Queen Margot (La Reine Margot) (1994 Film): Goran Bregovic

First to recommend

Description

Upon watching the soundtrack of the film "Queen Margot", I was immediately struck by the music. The opening track called "Elo Hi" is sung by Ofra Haza and is simply stunning. It's undeniably the standout track on the disk. The other tracks are by Yugoslavian composer Goran Bregovic. They are eclectic and beautiful. You are transported to another time and place. Queen Margot (La Reine Margot)

First to recommend

Description

I am not usually a fan of romantic films. This one however, is one of my favorites. Perhaps the historical setting and the unusual amount of bloodletting, fighting and the fact that the romance wasn't treated the sappiest fashion curbed my blood sugar levels.

This film is superbly acted, shot and has the most amazing soundtrack.

Based on a novel by Alexandre Dumas, Queen Margot concerns the events behind infamous Massacre of St. Bartholomew in 16th-century France. Isabelle Adjani plays Margot, betrothed for political reasons to one man (Daniel Auteuil) by her mother (Virna Lisi), while she is, in fact, in love with another (Vincent Pérez). Despite the bond that grows between the reluctant couple, plots are hatching all over the castle against the royals. Adventurous, exciting, erotic, and given strong artistic credibility through its outstanding cast, the film is enthralling and visually sumptuous. Directed by Patrice Chereau, less known outside of France than is the film's producer, Claude Berri (director of Jean de Florette and Manon of the Spring). (via amazon.com)

Animals Make Us Human: Creating the Best Life for Animals: Temple Grandin, Catherine Johnson

First to recommend

Description

It's difficult to know where to know where to begin with this book. It covers a LOT of ground. However, if you are a pet owner, an animal lover --- it's a must read. Some of the things that Temple Grandin discusses are intuitive. For instance, the premise that animals do have feelings. I know that in a scientific world we don't like to hear that, but as a pet owner and scientist --- I've observed it. This book talks about how we can best make animals happy.

From Amazon:

Grandin (Animals in Translation), famed for her decades-long commitment to treating livestock as humanely as possible on its way to slaughter, considers how humans and animals can best interact. Working from the premise that an animal is a conscious being that has feelings, the autistic author assesses dogs, cats, horses, cows, pigs, poultry, wildlife and zoo animals based on a core emotion system she believes animals and humans share, including a need to seek; a sense of rage, fear, and panic; feelings of lust; an urge to nurture; and an ability to play. Among observations at odds with conventional wisdom: dogs need human parents, not alpha pack leaders, and cats respond to training. Discussions of why horses are skittish and why pigs are arguably the most intelligent of beasts—raccoons run them a close second—illuminate the intersection of people and more domesticated animals; chapters on cows and chickens focus more generally on animal welfare, particularly the horrific conditions in which they are usually raised and slaughtered. Packed with fascinating insights, unexpected observations and a wealth of how-to tips, Grandin's peppy work ably challenges assumptions about what makes animals happy.

I'm not sure how I first happened across this book. Perhaps the author. I was a tremendous fan of hers during the 1990's. Anyway, this is an awesome depiction of art gone very wrong. I suspect that if you put this on your coffee table, that it will provoke some rather unusual if not interesting conversations. (via amazon.com)

Blonde Roots: Bernardine Evaristo

First to recommend

Description

A provocative novel that upends the history of the transatlantic slave trade, reversing and reexamining notions of savagery and civilization, as it follows a young woman’s journey to freedom.

Award-winning writer Bernardine Evaristo’s novel Blonde Roots asks: What if the history of the transatlantic slave trade had been reversed and Africans had enslaved Europeans? How would that have changed the ways that people justified their inhuman behavior? And how would it inform our cultural attitudes and the insidious racism that still lingers—and sometimes festers—today? (via amazon.com)
