Description
I hate to admit it, but this movie adaptation inspired me to read the book that spawned it. I usually like it to be the other way around. However, it was so amazing that I found myself craving more from some source after the movie was over. So, I picked up the book. When it was available, I bought the DVD, and I rarely buy DVDs.
It even made me appreciate Brad Pitt as an actor. Before then I saw him as another Hollywood pretty boy, that did nothing but scab the face of acting. In this flick, he gave Tyler Durden substance, depth, an f'd up sense of humor and an incredible six-pack. Edward Norton as the unnamed narrator and confused, somnambulant protagonist is remarkable, pathetic and utterly convincing. I can't think of one actor in this film that didn't completely pull off, if not nail their performance; including Helena Bonham Carter as Marla Singer and Meatloaf...yes, the Meatloaf as Bob "Bitchtits" Paulson.
I laughed my ass off. I drew universal truths. I wanted to fight. I love this film.

Field Notes Brand - FIELD NOTES

Description
I use small notebooks such as these to make general notes so that I don't forget things when I am out and about.
This is the first time I have come across these eco-friendly "Field Notes" books in an "on the go" format. These would be perfect for me as a birdwatcher, note scribbler and list maker.

This is actually a decent Zinfandel, and very reasonably priced. Admittedly, I first tried it because of the cool name, label and price. However, I was pleasantly surprised. It makes a great housewarming gift or wine to bring along to a party.

Yellow Zombie Monkey by amyjoshandmade

Description
I think this is a pretty cool little zombie toy. And this time of year there are a lot of them out there. This one is not only special because it's handmade, but because it's well-made and creative. Apparently, this guy comes in differently colors, too. I have no idea why the yellow appealed to me. Perhaps because it made him look more jaundiced? (via etsy.com)

A Clockwork Orange

Description
One of my favorite films of all times. Stanley Kubrick's 1971 futuristic, "ultra-violent" masterwork where youth gangs roam the streets victimizing ordinary citizens and rumbling with one another.
Based on the brilliant novel by Anthony Burgess, this stylish film takes on larger societal and political themes, such as crime and punishment, scientific testing and research on inmates and basic human free will versus a "safer society".
Some of the scenes may be difficult for more sensitive viewers to take, due to their unflinching and stylized violence. However, in this film, violence is not portrayed just for its own sake. It is used to illustrate larger themes. You are not allowed to take your eyes away. Much like the anti-hero, Alex, later on in the film, when he voluntarily is subjected to experiments. During which his eyes are strapped open.
This is a classic that is not to be missed. With terrific performances by Malcolm McDowell and Patrick Magee, and the entire ensemble cast. Nominated for four Oscars in 1972. The accolades for this film are many, including The New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Film and Best Director.

How It Feels to Be Free: Nina Simone
First to recommend
Description
I picked this album up at a Starbuck's on a whim. I already loved Nina Simone, and had a compilation of her's. This one turned out to be the best one I have heard. All I had come in for was a Soy Cappucino.
Nina Simone sang gorgeous bittersweet songs that combined her influences of folk, blues, soul and and jazz with politically relevant messages. Her rich, mahogany voice is a emotional force to be reckoned with. The tracks on this album range from Bob Dylan's "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" (which is amazing) to her deeply soulful rendition of "In The Dark". This album sets atmosphere with the beginning and finish of every track. She always remained an original and gives true meaning to the word "artist". (via amazon.com)

Sigur Rós :: Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust

Description
The sound of Iceland's experimental Sigur Ros first left an impression on me back in the late 90's when I heard a track from one of their first albums on a late night radio show. It was like nothing I had heard before. A mix between the piercing vocals of Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Gregorian chant. I don't really know. Anyway, it left an immediate impression and never went away. I always paid attention when I heard them mentioned from then on, but never managed to lay my hands on an album. Go figure.
With the release of their latest album "Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust" (literally meaning "With a buzz in our ears we play endlessly"), I was determined to finally own one.
What I have finally been able to experience is a dreamy and atmospheric series of soundscapes, supported by bouncy rhythms, and Jon Birgisson's soaring and sometimes heartbreaking falsetto. Dark minimalist tracks. Lush orchestral arrangements. Content is hard to pin down, due to the fact that lyrically Sigur Ros sticks to their native Icelandic tongue. That is, with the exception of their first all English track at the end of the album. The music is exceptional in its ability to move you emotionally. Even though I can't understand the lyrics, I've definitely become a fan. (via deepdiscount.com)

Chuck Palahniuk: Fight Club

Description
It's impossible to know where to begin with this book. I saw the movie before I read it. The film was why I ended up wanting to read it.
The person that recommended this book before me said that in the novel the characters take on a life of their own. While this is entirely true, what she didn't say was how this thoroughly engrossing novel takes on a life of its own not only through its characters, but through its larger themes and judgments that it makes on society as a whole. The situations that the unnamed narrator and main character find himself in are like hilarious train wrecks that you can't take your eyes off of. From self-help groups on testicular cancer and brain parasites to rendering soap from human fat.
This wildly inventive and caustic novel just goes on and on. In a way it is more vivid than the film, because your mind has to create its own crazy images, and come to its own conclusions on the barrage of moral and social dilemmas. Without the urging of film gods or carefully planned images.

Godiva Chocoiste Dark Chocolate Cherries, Set of 3

Description
If I'm going to eat chocolate, I only want the best. Godiva is one of my favorites. Also, I'm pretty much only partial to dark chocolate. I haven't been a big fan of the milk variety for years.
Luckily for me, all of the studies coming out saying that chocolate is good for you over the past few years recommend dark chocolate because of all of the antioxidants and low fat content.
The combination of tart and sweet is always a tantalizing proposition for me. Godiva's Chocoiste Dark Chocolate Cherries sound absolutely delicious! I tend to eat chocolate very sparingly, so this 3-pack would last me for quite a while. I cannot wait to try this. (via godiva.com)
