We Are Still Modern - a list by radstuff

About this list:

Most decorator art that I see on people's walls are shiny posters from boring exhibitions, or dirt-common impressionist prints (often these are the same, unsurprisingly). BORING. Hey, if you've got flower print wall-paper and doilies strewn about, go for it. I prefer to pursue a modernist aesthetic in order to remind myself of the days when the visual arts were still relevant, but with an urban sensibility, rather than bucolic scenes.

Qualifications:

I have impeccable taste and a refined aesthetic sensibility.

The Melancholic Singer print by Joan Miró

First to recommend

Description

This print demonstrates Miró's style in what I think of as his heyday, incorporating basic shapes with his familiar palette of colors. He was able to achieve a depth combined with whimsy that few of his contemporaries could rival. I would also add that a print like this omits added text with the artist's name and title of the work, or exhibition information, which in my opinion makes otherwise fine pieces of art look like $5 posters made for tourists.

The Girl Print by Joan Miró

First to recommend

Description

Late period Miró is so simple that it can fit anywhere in your home without becoming distracting, but bold enough to add a touch of color and vigor wherever you may need it. Although I personally prefer his work from the 30's and 40's, those paintings are a lot busier; if you prefer your decoration a bit more minimalist, a print like this might appeal.

Convection Print by Alexander Calder

First to recommend

Description

This print is simple enough to work into almost any contemporary decor (so long as it's not stainless steel and black leather, I suppose) but bold enough to catch the eye and attention of visitors. It's inexpensive, not too obtrusive at 26"x20", and pleasingly evocative.

Spirals and Petals, 1969 Serigraph by Alexander Calder

First to recommend

Description

Alexander Calder is best known for making the mobile a valid art-form in the 20th Century, but he also made prints. This is an attractive serigraph that won't break the bank. It probably won't appreciate tremendously in value, but for the price, it beats the hell out of some shiny poster of impressionism. This one definitely shows the life-long influence of Joan Miró, and would match well with any modernist theme you want to pursue.

Ekko Mobiles Tilt

Description

This mobile is fantastic, and since it's painted steel, it is built to last, but sadly at 36" x 30" is a little on the large size for my apartment. Once I get some high ceilings, and the house to go with them, I'm going to have mobiles like this hanging everywhere. Certainly cheaper than a real Calder!

Steve DeSpirito Reaching Mobile

Description

I love Alexander Calder's mobiles, and really want something different for decoration despite having very little wall space left. There are a lot of Calder-style mobiles to choose from, but this one I think evokes Calder quite nicely and isn't so big (at 24"x32") as to overwhelm an apartment living room. I know what I want for Christmas.

Not allowed to drill holes in the ceiling for a mobile? Try a stabile. This Calder-like piece of art will look a lot cooler on your desk than those clacky metal balls.

Computer Hanging Mobile by Leah Pellegrini

Description

Attach this to the side of your monitor and relive your days in the crib. I don't know if it will stand up to being batted around, but the site selling it claims it reduces eye strain by giving you something fun to focus on. It looks better than those USB plug-in led light things, anyway.
