Science & Sons Park Planters

First to recommend

Description

Accented by a handful of classic Central Park scenarios of degradation, Science and Sons' Park Planters collection is a set of 6” x 6” x 12” ceramic covered pots with surfaces featuring illegitimate public scenes. This one isn't even the most outlandish depiction, but the entire set creates a funny contrast between the delicate white sculptural forms and the acts the figures are engaged in.

Wood Salt + Pepper Shakers

Description

Warm and homey, this Wood Salt + Pepper Shakers set from Domestic Aesthetic sort of looks like something your hippy parents might have utilized, but I like the basic, casual feel. Both pieces are made from reclaimed wood (poplar for the salt, walnut for the pepper) and feature a natural cork stopper.

Moon Carpet

First to recommend

Description

Part of me says this rug is more ideal for kids, but I can see appreciating this piece for its quirky, clever design regardless of your maturity level. Handmade from 100% wool, the rug is thick enough to feature indentations suggesting craters. It's sure to inspire many a corker about walking on the moon.

Such a simple idea that makes so much sense. Playing on the tradition of candles on birthday cakes, Fake Cake utilizes the slice of cake form as a candleholder base. Designed by Maxim Velcovsky, the piece comes in a set of uniquely decorated versions, each incorporating elements of commercial packaging.

Skeleton Pillow by Ortolan

First to recommend

Description

There's a bit of organic black humor here, rendering the skeleton of a dead bird on a pillow totally reasonable and even a bit stylish. The canvas is made from 100% certified organic cotton, and the graphic is printed in non-toxic, natural squid ink.

Karim Rashid Fruit Bowl

First to recommend

Description

Karim Rashid may not eat fruit, but he does design a fetching fruit bowl. This 7 Hills Fruitbowl is a remarkable centerpiece to a countertop or dining table, and its organic feel creates a nice dialog with the fruit it supports. There also appears to be a reference to any odd "city of the seven hills" -- be it Rome, Lisbon, Istanbul, et al -- in here somewhere.
