PalmĀ® Treo 650 Smartphone

Popular for good reason.
Great screen resolution, full PalmOS PDA, pretty good reception (at least on the Sprint PCS network in major cities), usable web browser, bluetooth capability, DateBook, Contacts database, MP3/Audible player, and so on.

Camera is somewhat usable if you have a still, close subject in bright light but otherwise you can forget about it.

Note that the screen resolution is *better* than the Treo 700 models.
This is the phone to get if you would like PalmOS. If you want Windows CE, you'll have to get a recommendation elsewhere.

Small, flat size fits easily into a pocket. Advanced Canon quality features and a fairly fast response time.

The SD400 model is smaller than the SD500, and has the same processing, so if you can get away with "only" 5 megapixels, it's a better choice.

SlimSlimmy wallet

I've been on a quest to find a small, thin, but usable wallet. I decided to give the Slimmy a try after seeing the SlimSlimmy recommended on ThisNext. I chose the Slimmy because I only wanted to fold my cash once. The SlimSlimmy requires folding US currency in thirds which makes it thicker.

I am very happy so far with my Slimmy wallet. I can easily fit 3 ATM/credit cards, drivers license, 2 insurance cards, 2 folded checks, Ichima Sushi VIP card, and folded cash (up to 10 or so bills at my comfort level). The wallet obviously can't make any of that thinner, but at least it doesn't add much thickness and the leather has a nice look and feel.

An empty Slimmy is actually a smidge thicker than the fine woven wallet I bought in Sagada (a remote mountain village in the Philippines) so their claim of "slimmest wallet on Earth" is not entirely true; but overall the Slimmy has a much smaller profile and is much easier to procure so I am happy to own and recommend it.

Note: Stay away from the Jimi also sold by Koyono and others. That plastic wallet had great marketing, but was unecessarily thick and fell apart on me after a month. (via bzipkin)

Fits in your pocket as easily as the Leatherman Micra but most of the tools are accessible on the sides without unfolding the whole thing. Plus it comes in different colors.

Look at the model when buying as the S4 has scissor and the P4 has pliers.

Canon Soft Leather Case for Canon Digital ELPH Cameras
Updated Jul 27, 2006

My favorite leather cover for the Canon SD450 (and probably other small cameras). It won't protect a camera from a fall, but it's made of very soft leather, is not bulky like other cases, and still protects from scratches.

I don't know if it's still available anywhere.

Your life is in your Treo 650 and the life of your Treo 650 is in its battery. Why not have a spare on hand? They've really dropped in price, especially if you pick it up from my friend Patrick at TechBudget.com.

It's the smallest 1GB USB memory stick that I've found. And, that's because it's the size and shape of an SD card. And, that's because it *is* an SD card!
This means that you can use it in your Treo 650 and/or your Canon SD400 as a standard SD memory card and then (after hinging part of the card down) plug it into your computer's USB port to transfer pictures or data.

Yes, it really works and I've had no problems with the USB connection even though it doesn't have all of the bulk of the normal USB plugs.

The only drawback is that it is a little wide when plugged into the USB port, so it may prevent adjacent USB ports from being used at the same time.

This replaced my existing SD card and eliminated my need for two other devices: my SD card reader and my USB keychain memory stick.

This card also comes with a slim keychain holder so that it doesn't get lost in your pocket if you don't have a phone or camera.

I hadn't worn a watch in years, but after discovering this watch on ThisNext, I had to break my own rule. I love the simple, clean, bold look. It reminds me of my favorite $15 black on white Timex that I owned decades ago, but this one adds an interesting red second hand and costs ten times as much. (via loft3)

The best thing about this pen is how the smooth curves feel in your hand when it's closed. You'll find yourself fiddling with it even if you're not usually an idle fiddler.

These pens are not good for filling out rebate forms; but when you're writing in normal size letters, the generous ink flow makes for very smooth and easy writing.

Blinding white light (120 lumens) in a compact hand-held torch. If you're going to spend over $100 on a small flashlight, this is it. Warning: They claim the LED bulb can't be broken if you drop it, but I dropped it on concrete and *something* broke. If you're going to spend over $100 on a flashlight, don't drop it.

Positives: Tiny, light weight, good volume.

Negatives: So light weight you'll forget you're wearing it and you'll walk around looking like a person wearing a bluetooth headset.

Disclaimer: I actually have the HBH 600, but I tried the 608 and liked it even better.

Warning: It took me a while to figure out how to wear this headset. The speaker portion does not fit tightly in the ear, but once I got it settled it works very well for me. A friend bought this model and never got it to fit quite right with his ear shape.

TomTom Navigator 5 for Treo 650
Updated Jun 20, 2006

We left home late to meet relatives at a restaurant, but thanks to the TomTom navigation software, we were provided with quick, clear directions, saving us even more time hunting around for our destination.

Combined with a bluetooth GPS and a Treo 650, this software provides a complete in car navigation system, complete with real-time updated maps and voice driving directions.

In my limited use so far, I've been a little disappointed that the voice instructions haven't been quite enough to figure out exactly which turn/exit to take, but combined with the onscreen info I had no trouble figuring out where to go.

What's really cool about the TomTom software is that if you miss a turn, it quickly recalculates the route based on your new location and direction and gives you the new best directions.

You can also ask it to avoid certain parts of the route, notify you when you are near a gas station or restaurant, and much more.

Tips:

- Make sure you buy the correct version of the TomTom software (one that will run on your Treo 650 PalmOS).

- Make sure you download and install the latest software upgrade from TomTom.com before trying to install this on your Treo 650. Following that tip would have saved me a half hour of wasted effort. (via joe)

After reading a number of positive reviews for GustBuster umbrellas, I finally had the chance to buy one (i.e., I left my old umbrella somewhere and never found it). Then, I waited months and months until I had the chance to use it. Finally it rained in LA and I can now join the ranks of the GustBuster fans.

This umbrella is very well built. It has a very nice feel to the action during opening, locking, unlocking and closing. I chose the 62" model because there is a lot of me to protect from the rain, but I have to assume that the many other GustBuster models are of equal quality.

Saw the recomendations on ThisNext and bought some through Amazon. I'm glad I have them and would recommend them to others, but wish the ends closed a little tighter to better secure stiffer cords.

Warning: Do not purchase these from "IGgFactory Handhelditems" (an Amazon vendor). They only sent me half my order and never responded to any of my emails through Amazon or their own web site even though I provided my cell phone. When I posted about this on Amazon, they started sending me money offers to take down the negative feedback. Too late.
