Metal - A Headbanger's Journey

First to recommend

Description

If you love metal in any way, shape or form, this is a must see documentary. Sam Dunn is an anthropologist (he got his degree writing about Guatemalan refugees), who decided he wanted to study another social group who is close to his heart. That's right kids, metal heads! He has such a clear love of the music this is just a joy to watch. I especially loved his interview with Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden (I'm a huge Maiden fan myself). The bonus DVD has some especially great stuff on it. My fav. with the interview with Lemmy at the Rainbow. Also, not to be missed is the disturbing yet fascinating mini-documentary on Norwegian Death Metal!

Lord Don't Slow Me Down - Oasis

First to recommend

Description

It seems people either love or hate the Gallagher brothers! Count me in the love faction! Sure they fight (what siblings don't?) and sure they "borrow from the Beatles" (why not "borrow" from one of the best I say, others who are more popular have done a lot worse). However, what the haters loose site of is that Oasis is one of the best if not the best Britpop band to come along in the past 20 years. OK, now that we have my Gallagher brother defense out of the way, I can tell you why you need this awesome DVD (which I have already pre-ordered and so should you). It shows a candid look at life on the road (and shows a more balanced side of the brothers from what I have heard) as well as cumulating in their welcome home gig in Manchester! This is a must have! Oh yea, the title track of this DVD (which is included with the DVD) is smokin' (I've heard it many times already on the Underground Garage)!

The Johnny Cash Show: The Best of Johnny Cash 1969-1971

First to recommend

Description

Johnny Cash was way ahead of his time with this show. He had some really amazing music guests. The highlight for me was seeing Derek and the Dominos (Eric Clapton) with Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash and Ray Charles doing Ring of Fire!

Doctor Who - The Complete First Series

First to recommend

Description

First let me say I was not at all familiar with the old version of this series other than I knew it was on in the

60's and had a huge fan base. You do not need to have even heard of Doctor Who prior to reading this to enjoy this

new BBC iteration of the series or to understand it (if you really want to know the entire Doctor Who lore however, a quick trip to Wikipedia will bring you up to speed)! I just started watching it (here in the States they are running Season 3 on BBCA and a Season 4 is in the works). This is my absolute fav. show. Dare I say I even love it more than Buffy.

This new version of Doctor Who starts out with Christopher Eccleston (he also played Claude in Season 1 of Heroes and as a tip of the hat to him playing the Doctor, you can hear him saying "Fantastic" quite a bit, which is something the Doctor is fond of saying quite often) playing the 9th version of the Doctor here in Season 1. Billie Piper plays his companion Rose Tyler. While the aliens, other worlds, time travel, etc. is awesome, it is really the relationship between the Doctor and Rose that drives the show and makes it so, as the Doctor would say, fantastic!!

Doctor Who - The Complete Second Series

First to recommend

Description

Swoon, David Tenant, the 10th Doctor Who (who takes over in Season 2 from Christopher Eccleston who plays the Doctor in Season 1) is my new boyfriend! One of the brilliant things that the creators of Doctor Who did back in the day when they created the series, was to build in the fact that the Doctor may need to regenerate once in a while (such as if he's near death) and when he is regenerated he will look different. Genius! That way, if one actor leaves the role for whatever reason, a new actor can take his place without that awkwardness that happens when one actor takes over for another (we all remember the two Darren's in Bewitched and no good came of that). While Christopher Eccleston was as the Doctor would say "fantastic' as the 9th Doctor, David Tenant is beyond fantastic. First of all, he's just adorable. Christopher Eccleston as the 9th Doctor rocked the leather jacket. David Tenant as the 10th Doctor is rocking the suit, trenchie and Chucks! The result is somewhat modish and purely adorable. But, beyond the fact he is adorable, is the man is a fantastic actor. The Doctor can go from happy to concerned, to funny to slightly crazy all in the blink of an eye! Just a brilliant range of emotions. The fantastic Billie Piper is back as the Doctor's companion Rose Tyler. And as ever, it is really the relationship between the Doctor and Rose that drives the stories! Fantastic!!

This has replaced Buffy as my all time favorite show! Watch it and see why!!

Doctor Who - The Complete Third Series

First to recommend

Description

David Tenant (swoon....be still my heart!) contines his run as the Doctor in Season 3 of my most favorite show of all time! Freema Agyeman is his new companion, Martha Jones (she is also a doctor, although an Earth type of doctor). For those who grew to know and love the character of Rose Tyler (played by the wonderful Bilie Piper) as the Doctor's companion it would seem she would be hard to replace. The character of Martha Jones is different than Rose, but equally as well. Freema Agyeman is a wonderful actress and does a great job portraying Martha. More aliens and time travel abound! Also, another favorite actor of mine, John Simms (Sam Tyler on Life on Mars, another brilliant must see show) plays a villian in a few episodes. Check this out and see why it is my new favorite show of all time and the best thing on tv.!!

Torchwood - The Complete First Season

First to recommend

Description

Torchwood and Doctor Who are the absolute best shows on tv. I know many would argue that that honor currently belongs to Battlestar Galatica (which I do like a lot) but I disagree.

When I was first introduced to the character of Captain Jack Harkness in Season 1 of Doctor Who he rather annoyed me. I never saw how I would ever come to like this character. Let me tell you, Captain Jack rocks! While at first introduction he might seem a very shallow character he is absolutely not. He is an extremely complex character that I love more with each episode. However, it is not just Captain Jack that makes Torchwood so spectacular . It is the entire cast of characters and their complex relationships. it is Jack, Tosh, Ianto, Gwen and Owen that make it all work.

If you are new to the Doctor Who/Torchwood world, I would recommend watching Season 1-3 of Doctor Who and then watching Season 1 of Torchwood if you want to get the full history (and Jack's). However, if you just want to dig it and start watching Torchwood, they do explain enough that you will enjoy the show and it will make sense.

Check this out and see what a great ensemble cast really looks like!

Malcolm X (Two-Disc Special Edition)

First to recommend

Description

An absolute amazing movie from Spike Lee about this extraordinary man. It is an crying shame that Denzel did not with the Oscar he absolutely deserved for this movie! Malcolm X was one of the most important leaders of our time. This movie really make you wonder what would have happened if he was not taken from us so soon. If you have not seen this movie yet, you need to get it ASAP!

Description

This is one of the best movies that I have recently seen. It tells the story of Genghis Khan's early life and his rise to power to unite all the Mongol tribes. If you haven't seen this yet I highly recommend you catch it on the big screen. I will definitely be buying it on DVD when it comes out I liked it that much

Stax/Volt Revue Live In Norway 1967

First to recommend

Description

This is the most amazing DVD! Some of the most popular Stax artists performing on a Norwegian TV show. Otis, of course is amazing! However, my fav. of this DVD is the performance of Sam and Dave! WOW! WOW! WOW! If any band or music act wants to see what a live performance should be, Sam and Dave will school you!

An added fun bit is to check out the Norwegian 60's hipsters in the audience. Some of the fashion and style is very interesting

Music by women who are true Mavens (and a few who are new on the scene and appear to be up and coming Mavens, IMO).
