The Perfect G&T - a list by jooxi

About this list:

Everyone should try a good gin and tonic at least once. It's a classic drink, has only 2 ingredients and fits the lifestyle of any English dandy-wannabe better than a pre-WWII Roll's. Plus it's very refreshing and a great evening summer drink. Here's the recipe: 1 part (6 oz) gin, 2 parts (4 oz) tonic. Pour the gin into a highball (largish) glass filled with ice. Add the tonic slowly, and stir if desired. Extra points if you garnish with a lemon/lime wedge. A great night-cap.

Qualifications:

Tonic + Gin = perfection.

Q Tonic –

First to recommend

Description

Q Tonic is a new, premium tonic water. It comes in individual, bottle-cap bottles that are designed for one drink. Q Tonic does some things differently from commercial brands:

-Hand-picked quinine from the Peruvian Andes (not synthetic)
-Organic agave as the sweetener (no high-fructose corn syrup!)
-60% fewer calories than regular tonic water (one bottle has 24, that's right 24 calories)
-85% lower glycemic rating than other tonic waters (that's the agave working)

I don't think synthetic quinine is a huge issue, but using agave instead of corn syrup IS. And 24 calories? Wow. Most Tonic's are at least 90. Not to mention the quietly awesome bottle.

The company claims Q Tonic has a sharper, cleaner taste with a gently rounded sweetness - one that doesn't overpower your drink, but rather complements it.

Sadly I can't give my own opinion on Q Tonic yet as I haven't had a chance to try it. But you can be sure I will soon, and let you know!

UPDATE: LIttle box came today with 2 bottles. I must say, not bad at all! First of all the bottle design is quite elegant, and it has a real bottle-cap you have to open (one of my little quirks). Oh yes, the tonic itself. I've always been a bit more on the gin side, preferring a slightly higher g to t ratio. Perhaps this is why I like Q Tonic. It is sweet enough to add flavor and mask the quinine bitterness, but just enough - it leaves plenty of savory crispness. Yet it's certainly not bitter, just a teeny bit less sweet than other tonics - perhaps agave is sweeter AND lower in calories? (1 bottle is 30 btw.) All in all, this may just be my new favorite tonic. I highly recommend you try a bottle and see what you think.

Bombay Gin

First to recommend

Description

While I've recommended Bombay Sapphire in the past, Bombay Dry Gin is the original recipe and my standard go-to. Their distillation process captures all the right flavors using all the right ingredients (coriander and angelica root to name 2) giving the gin a slightly more earthy, rounded taste, while letting the juniper berries shine. It's a great gin (it's been made roughly the same way since 1761) and is cheaper than the sapphire version.

Plus, I think that's Queen Victoria on the bottle, so win-win, right?

Bombay Sapphire Gin

5 people recommended this item

Description

Lately I've been partial to a good gin and tonic, probably because of my diet of P.G. Wodehouse literature (Bertie also likes whisky and soda.) If you are making a g&t, try out Bombay Sapphire. It's a newer, premium version of Bombay gin, with a finer, more subtle taste and a cool bottle.

I recommend Canada Dry for the Tonic Water.

Canada Dry Tonic Water

First to recommend

Description

Liking to think I'm a gentlemanly dandy, a good Gin and Tonic is my poison of choice. I use Canada Dry for my tonic water needs. It's simple, it works, and I like the yellow label. It's available everywhere in a standard 1-liter bottle, and also in single serve packs as shown here.

Canada Dry also makes a mythical sugar-free version which I have yet to see in my local stores.
