I discovered the Ecover line as a student studying abroad in New Zealand. Their Ecological Stain Remover became my weapon of choice against mud, grass, lentil, tree sap, and even blood stains on my clothes and gear after every tramp through the NZ bush. I brought a bottle back to the U.S. with me and rationed it on my most beloved items (safe on cotton and most synthetics; I've used it on some wool, but not before spot-testing) and for the most ominous stains.

This is indeed a stain remover—not just a pre-treatment against setting stains. Spots vanish beneath the fluffy suds, and yet it's so gentle that I can go ahead and rewear an item before putting it through the wash to rinse away that patch of hardened residue left by some sprays and gels. It truly works wonders.
