Cabaret

2 people recommended this item

Description

Wilkommen! This is the remarkable story about life in 1931 Berlin from the perspective of a group of bonne vivants at the Kit Kat Club nightclub. At the centre of the tale is the American Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli), her lover Brian (Michael York) and the nightclub's Master of Ceremonies played by the scene-stealing Joel Grey.

As the economic, social and political situation in Germany deteriorates, the gang at the Kit Kat Club try to distract their patrons and themselves from what is happening. Cabaret won 8 Academy Awards in 1972. The songs are absolute classics and performed with the perfect amount of emotion, glee and sensuality, the costumes are dramatic and its easy to forget that this was made in the early 70s.

A love song to the decadent side to Berlin, it's a truly remarkable film.

Hard Core Logo

First to recommend

Description

Please ignore the marketing on the DVD cover and any references to Spinal Tap, this is NOT the punk-rock Spinal Tap. OK, it's a very funny movie and shot in the fake documentary style, but it's not irreverant or satirical and definitely not a comedy.

Followed by a film crew, an aging and defunct punk band reunites for one last Western Canada tour and hopefully last hurrah. Director Bruce McDonald is a master of the "Canadian road trip" flick and with Hard Core Logo combines it with Canada's underground punk music scene. Real life rock band frontman of The Headstones Hugh Dillon lends credibility to his role as Hard Core Logo's frontman Joe Dick. (Now an award-winning actor, this role was one of Dillon's first.) Charismatic and handsome Callum Keith Rennie plays Dick's childhood friend Billy Tallent, who has been slated to join a much more successful rock band after this final Hard Core Logo tour. Troubled bass player John Oxenburger (John Pyper-Ferguson) gradually loses hold of his sanity and then there's the buffoonish drummer (aren't they all?) Pipefitter, perhaps the most well-adjusted of them all.

It's a gritty, funny, poignant film and as quintessentially cool Canadian as you can get. A must-see! You won't soon forget Hard Core Logo's final shot, I promise you.

4 guys - 5 nights - 3000 miles - 764 gallons of gas - 987 bottles of beer - 3457 cigarettes - 1 last shot

Moulin Rouge (2-Disc Collector's Edition) (DVD)

Spectacular, over-the-top visuals and romance. Baz Luhrmann is a genius for simply giving me Ewan Macgregor as a proper leading man! Amazing costumes, production numbers, sets, styling and a fantastic cast. You'll want to watch it again and again!

Shallow Grave

First to recommend

Description

Danny Boyle is one of my absolute favourite directors. Every film he makes is in a different classic genre, and he encapsulates each one perfectly while adding his own twist to it.

Shallow Grave was his first film and paired with screenwriter John Hodge and producer Andrew Macdonald (the trio would go on to make The Beach, A Life Less Ordinary and The Beach), he has created a wonderfully Hitchcockian stylish and suspenseful dark drama. Three wonderfully elitist yuppies (played by Kerry Fox, Ewan Macgregor and Christopher Eccleston) need a fourth to share their amazing flat. When their choice, the mysterious Hugo (Keith Allen) overdoses on his first night there, the trio find a suitcase stuffed with cash in his room and decides to dispose of the body, keeping the money for themselves. Then things get really interesting...

It's a clever, excellently cast film about jealousy, ego and manipulations. The three leads are pitch-perfect and Boyle's eye for visuals saturate the film in shart angles, rich textures and lighting.

Marie Antoinette (2006)

9 people recommended this item

Description

This film was criticized as playing fast and loose with history and being vacuous to boot. It tells the story of arguably the most famous and infamous queen in history, French queen Marie Antoinette, whose husband was at the helm of a France dissolving into revolution.

Sofia Coppola has crafted a believable story around the teenager thrust into the pomp of overblown French society. And too little positive attention has been given to the attention paid to all the costumes, sets and style of the film. That's what sticks out most - and Coppola should not be criticized for "glossing over" the historical details. This is a film about Marie Antoinette, not Marie Antoinette and the French Revolution.

It's soundtracked to surprising effect with new wave - yet another thing Coppola's been criticised for - but it adds interest and allows for Marie Antoinette's story to have some modern relevance.

It's a candy-coloured fantastic film full of visual delights and Kirsten Dunst does a stellar job in the lead role.

24 Hour Party People

4 people recommended this item

Description

Quite frankly, this is the film that the subject matter deserved. Telling the story of Manchester's Factory Records and its founder Tony Wilson (played by the brilliant Steve Coogan), and featuring the introductions of the Sex Pistols, Joy Division, New Order and the Happy Mondays, 24 Hour Party People is a frenetic, fascinating and incredibly entertaining. Director Michael Winterbottom may not consistently hit the mark, but when he does, you get this.

Oh, and the soundtrack? Fantastic, as you might expect!

Rushmore: Wes Anderson (The Criterion Collection)

4 people recommended this item

Description

One of my favourite movies of all time. It's startingly excellent in many ways - the writing, the look, the performances and the soundtrack.

Wes Anderson is simply put, a genius. To be able to defy so many traditional film conventions and still create something riveting and entertaining is remarkable. That actor and tabloid favourite Owen Wilson co-wrote Rushmore and a number of other excellent scripts almost forgives him for movies like Fool's Gold.

This tale of a precocious teen named Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) who befriends his lovely first-grade teacher (Olivia Williams) and a wealthy man getting lost in middle age (Bill Murray) is funny, original and touching. You can't help but like these characters as dark and deeply flawed as they are.

And the soundtrack is brilliant.

Control (2007) DVD

4 people recommended this item

Description

This could have been a mess, easily. In many ways, Ian Curtis' short life is a rock n roll cliche - a massively talented singer and songwriter commits suicide - and the sketchy details of his story has become legend among Joy Division fans and music fans.

But it's not. And it's sad, but not depressing. Brilliantly acted by Sam Riley, directed by photographer/video director Anton Corbijn and shot entirely in black & white, Control has a depth and intimacy that's unexpected. Based on the biography written by Curtis' wife Deborah, it's an unsentimental yet loving look at one man's truly tragic end. No wonder he's a legend.

Beautiful Girls: Music From The Miramax Motion Picture

Description

It brings you right back into the movie and makes you smile. This is an immensely playable album even if you haven't seen the movie - blending "classic" 90s rock from the Afghan Whigs and Pete Droge and some old classics by KISS and the song I can't help to sing along to, "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond.

Amelie: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

First to recommend

3 people recommended this item

Description

Composed by Yann Tiersen, chances are you've heard this soundtrack in a coffee shop or cafe even if you didn't recognize it, so charming is the score to the award-winning 2001 film Amelie. The score mixes strings, vocals, piano and accordian for an undeniably Parisian sound and perfectly captures the whimsy, charm and quirkiness of the film. Let yourself get lost in it.
