Adopt an Animal WWF
3 people recommended this item
Description
Oh, even better than the National Zoo adoption is adopting from WWF (but one can choose based on their own interests - not mine). They are heavily involved with conservation efforts, such as preserving habitats. Habitat loss is one of the main causes for species decline, and think about it...it is mostly human-related. Other factors could be a loss from invasive species...that most likely were introduced from humans. So, either way, we just like screwing it up for creatures other than ourselves.
....and again, what a personal way to teach children about animals and their threats. It must feel good for them to know they are helping the animals they love. There is a more diverse range of animals here, something to suit everyone.

Adopt a Species - National Zoo
First to recommend
Description
"The program helps support the care of 2,000 animals at the National Zoo and its Conservation and Research Center"
More importantly, how much do you think a child will learn about a particular animal if they "adopt" one. What a great way to impact children and make a contribution to conservation efforts.
There is a list of animals that can be adopted. They range from birds to big cats to invertebrates to small and large mammals to reptiles. Contributions start at $40.

Orca Adoption Program Packages
First to recommend
Description
Great for a Show and Tell at school!
As Steve Irwin said, "If love something, you'll want to save it."
BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE:
This adoption package is different because it isn't just a general species you adopt, but a specific orca. The area has 3 resident pods that spend a lot of time in the San Juan Islands (very cool islands, great for kayaking and whale watching- definately recommend it). The pods are J, K, and L pods and each one is a close-knit family, offspring stay with the parents. These whales were recently added to the endangered species list, because they are genetically different from other orcas. Their numbers are drastically declining (all together have less than 90 individuals). It is completely possible that they will become extinct. So please, please, please support this cause!
INCLUDES:
You get lots of stuff with this contribution (non-profit), including: a biography of your whale, a booklet about the Southern Resident Orcas, genealogy charts, a newsletter and much more! They also have a very cool Classroom Adoption Package for teachers.
One last thing, how cool would it be to make it a priority to take a vacation to the area and have a chance to spot "your" whale! It doesn't get more personal than that!

Salt and Friends DVD

Description
Is about 15 humpback whales in the Gulf of Maine. This is supposed to be really superb. It is 60 minutes long, with 58 minutes of whale footage. It was made by using footage from whale watching since 1988. for those of us landlocked, this is great exposure to all that exists beyond our house! Great gift for kids and adults. This magazine is the BEST - I'm going to cancel my Smithsonian, just to get it (don't want to get more paper than I have).
The articles are great and best of all...the advertisements aren't supported by some gas guzzler - they are actually sustainable and green ads. Very nice

Worm composting

Description
Composting with worms is so easy! This is perfect for a small apartment in the city.
Worms + shredded paper + food (not meat or stuff like that)
= yummy food for plants!
If you get more compost than you could use, the BEST gift would be to wrap these up in something environmental and give them as gifts to gardeners! They would accept it as if it were gold.
And HELLO! Kids would love to watch this process.

I love the idea of spreading the word with something we wear. They have adult and children sizes. How awesome would it be to see a three year old claiming she saved a life?

Who is tired of watching stuffed animal calamity for hours on end? What a great idea of using shapes, colors and movement through natural scenes to get your little one's attention. It's also supposed to help with visual recognition. I think this will be a required baby shower gift in the future!
Filmed in France and Britain.
