Bottle Opener Key
22 people recommended this item
Description
I recently picked up one of these. It lives quietly on my key chain and comes out at those wild lab parties we throw every once in a while. I like that it fits into my mess of keys and doesn't take up much space. However, it isn't the best beer bottle opener in the world. It takes two tries to get a bottle open - so at the end of the day it wins because you get your beer.

Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive
2 people recommended this item
Description
A friend has one of these external hard drives and he loves it. He uses it to store work related documents, movies, music and photos and I borrow it from time to time as well. It is small enough to fit easily into a purse but has the functionality of any of the larger external HD you see. It comes in multiple colours (pretty much the whole rainbow) and is definitely worth considering for your data storage needs.

Hex Key L - Wrench Set on PB Swiss Tools
6 people recommended this item
Description
I always end up trying a few different hex wrenches before finding the right one to put the bolt in the centrifuge rotor, or to turn off the air conditioning. This rainbow set makes it easy to tell which one is which, and gosh darn it, they're just so purty. (via Apartment Therapy)

Yellow Ibis Science t-shirts
First to recommend
Description
There are a number of science t-shirts you can get out there. "Talk nerdy to me" and "I [heart] my geek." and so on. Yellow Ibis has shirts that say things like "I [three neck flask] chemistry" and a skull and crossbones with the crossbones replaced by pipetors, and this really cool glow in the dark benzene ring. Or for the geologist in your life, "I date rocks." Or for a more all purpose shirt, "I blinded me with science."
Yeah, I could spend most of my paycheck here. Easily. Or you could spend most of your paycheck here, buying shirts for me. Hint, hint.
I'd list individual shirts, but the site is not ThisNext friendly and I have experiments I should be doing.

Pexagon: Personalized Portable Hard Drive

Description
What is not to like about a personalized USB drive. This way the guys in the office won't accidentally walk off with yours, especially if it is flaming pink and has your name on it. Leave it in the library? You'll get it back from the librarian. (via Popgadget)

Posters: advice to sink in slowly
First to recommend
Description
"Advice to sink in slowly is a series of posters designed by recent and established graduates of University College Falmouth for the purpose of passing on advice and inspiration to first year students.
A poster is given as a welcoming gift to every first year student when they enroll."
A whole series of posters with quirky advice, "Learn and instrument", "Collaborate", "Explore and experiment."
There is also a series of postcards of these posters. These would be great for people who enjoy a creative workplace. (via Metafilter)

Netflix
19 people recommended this item
Description
Netflix is why store-based movie rental is going out of business. You choose from a huge database of movies, they send you the DVD, you watch it and return it when you're ready, then they send you the next movie in your queue.
The selection is large, the late fees do not exist, the convenience is great.
A subscription also makes a great last minute gift - you can select from subscriptions ranging from one month to a year and ranging from one to three movies at a time. This is a great gift for your parents who refuse to tell you what they want, your stay at home mom friend, your friend who just broke their leg skiing, or your boyfriend who loves horror movies. Or someone like me who watches movies on my laptop during my train commute.

North Face Sweeper Backpack

Description
I gave up on my DJ bag style bag. I loved how it looked but hated the back pain that resulted from me carrying too much stuff.
I also love my new backpack. I fill it up with heavy things and put it on my back and it feels like there's almost nothing in it. It has a pocket for my laptop and this pouch that fits my umbrella perfectly.
I know that adults carrying backpacks look goofy, but you know what, you look pretty goofy with the back pain.

2008 At-a-Glance Weekly Professional Appointment Book
First to recommend
Description
I used these through college and graduate school to keep track of classes, assignments and appointments. They aren't beautiful, but they work quite well. They have adequate space to write out the assignment or appointment completely and are quite functional. They won't get shredded in your backpack or easily lost - they're essentially 8.5 x 11. They come in a couple of different non-exciting colours (black, red ... )

Description
Prints of ink drawings backed by flat colour. I find myself wanting about six of these to put up on the walls at work.
