Hex Key L - Wrench Set on PB Swiss Tools

Updated Jul 12, 2008

3 people recommended this item

Description

I always end up trying a few different hex wrenches before finding the right one to put the bolt in the centrifuge rotor, or to turn off the air conditioning. This rainbow set makes it easy to tell which one is which, and gosh darn it, they're just so purty. (via Apartment Therapy)

Yellow Ibis Science t-shirts

Updated May 5, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

There are a number of science t-shirts you can get out there. "Talk nerdy to me" and "I [heart] my geek." and so on. Yellow Ibis has shirts that say things like "I [three neck flask] chemistry" and a skull and crossbones with the crossbones replaced by pipetors, and this really cool glow in the dark benzene ring. Or for the geologist in your life, "I date rocks." Or for a more all purpose shirt, "I blinded me with science."

Yeah, I could spend most of my paycheck here. Easily. Or you could spend most of your paycheck here, buying shirts for me. Hint, hint.

I'd list individual shirts, but the site is not ThisNext friendly and I have experiments I should be doing.

Pexagon: Personalized Portable Hard Drive

Updated Mar 17, 2008

Description

What is not to like about a personalized USB drive. This way the guys in the office won't accidentally walk off with yours, especially if it is flaming pink and has your name on it. Leave it in the library? You'll get it back from the librarian. (via Popgadget)

Posters: advice to sink in slowly

Updated Jan 24, 2008

1st to recommend

Description

"Advice to sink in slowly is a series of posters designed by recent and established graduates of University College Falmouth for the purpose of passing on advice and inspiration to first year students.

A poster is given as a welcoming gift to every first year student when they enroll."

A whole series of posters with quirky advice, "Learn and instrument", "Collaborate", "Explore and experiment."

There is also a series of postcards of these posters. These would be great for people who enjoy a creative workplace. (via Metafilter)

Netflix

Updated Dec 19, 2007

18 people recommended this item

Description

Netflix is why store-based movie rental is going out of business. You choose from a huge database of movies, they send you the DVD, you watch it and return it when you're ready, then they send you the next movie in your queue.

The selection is large, the late fees do not exist, the convenience is great.

A subscription also makes a great last minute gift - you can select from subscriptions ranging from one month to a year and ranging from one to three movies at a time. This is a great gift for your parents who refuse to tell you what they want, your stay at home mom friend, your friend who just broke their leg skiing, or your boyfriend who loves horror movies. Or someone like me who watches movies on my laptop during my train commute.

North Face Sweeper Backpack

Description

I gave up on my DJ bag style bag. I loved how it looked but hated the back pain that resulted from me carrying too much stuff.

I also love my new backpack. I fill it up with heavy things and put it on my back and it feels like there's almost nothing in it. It has a pocket for my laptop and this pouch that fits my umbrella perfectly.

I know that adults carrying backpacks look goofy, but you know what, you look pretty goofy with the back pain.

2008 At-a-Glance Weekly Professional Appointment Book

Updated Oct 25, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

I used these through college and graduate school to keep track of classes, assignments and appointments. They aren't beautiful, but they work quite well. They have adequate space to write out the assignment or appointment completely and are quite functional. They won't get shredded in your backpack or easily lost - they're essentially 8.5 x 11. They come in a couple of different non-exciting colours (black, red ... )

Various spice sets in convenient containers. This is the kind of thing that your friend would want as a housewarming gift, or your sister who likes cooking would be into for her birthday, or I would want so I stop knocking over all the containers and ziplocs of various spices that are in my cabinets.

A chai tea set looks like an especially nice gift.

Etsy Seller: Bliss by Heather

Updated Jul 30, 2007

Description

I'm in the market for a new messenger/backpack these days. On the train, I'm surrounded by the practical black bag, the ugly ballistic nylon messenger and the falling apart briefcase. I want something that is bright, that is comfortable and that I'll enjoy having in the sea of ugly functionality.

Bliss by Heather is almost there. I just want a good padded strap so the weight of the books and stuff is distributed on my shoulder. The colours are great, the designs are great ...

Old Navy women's tank tops

Updated May 5, 2007

2 people recommended this item

Description

These are thin rib women's tank tops. You might describe them as wife beaters if you were feeling particularly politically incorrect at the time.

I own about eight of these in various colours. They fit well, they wear well and they are quite comfortable. They aren't complicated, and they get the job done.

You can afford to buy lots of them since they are Old Navy priced.

Rare-Earth Magnets

Updated Apr 11, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

I've been noticing rare earth magnets popping up in all sorts of products - a magnetic strip to hang your knives on, a container that sticks to your fridge and doesn't fall down when you drop a pile of papers in it, and so on.

I now have a way to hang posters and prints on the metal walls of my new office. You can use them to hang a wreath on your front door or maybe even a curtain rod on your metal window frames (if they're susceptible to magnets).

Caution should be used with kids and pets around these magnets - if they swallow more than one, it can cause severe medical problems.

Mizrahi: Ultra Blue Flower Duvet Set

Updated Apr 5, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

A bold flower print that isn't fussy, frilly or pink. Target also sells similar sheet sets in a peony print.

I like the over-sized floral theme which instead of making the bed a dowdy piece of functional furniture, makes it into a art.

I can't wait for the day when there will be a company that will print your photographs to fabric.

Revenge CD with ear plugs

Updated Mar 17, 2007

1st to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

Do you love your neighbors? Do they respect the normal bounds of decency? If you answer yes to those questions, don't buy this.

This is for the neighbors that tie up their dog on a short leash and leave him out there barking and whining for days on end, or the ones who have that party that goes until 4am the night before your job interview, or the ones who mow the lawn at an ungodly early hour on the weekend, or the ones who decide to use their hedge trimmer just when you get the colicky baby to sleep. Plug in those earplugs and turn on this CD. Or better yet, turn on the CD and then go out to the movies.

When I was a kid my dad would usually haul out the Wagner in these situations. This is possibly more annoying to a larger group of people. Of course there's always Barry Manilow. (via Popgadget)

'SHUT UP' Tape

Updated Aug 23, 2007

4 people recommended this item

Description

Living and working on a college campus has persuaded me that this tape is a completely required piece of equipment. Slap a piece across someone's mouth as they launch into a monologue about how daddy has cut their allowance from $1000 a month, or a whine about how this years skiing trip to Utah was just so uncool because they didn't get those new skis they wanted, or just show off their tan from the two week trip to St. Bart's.

It is also useful for cell phone users who feel the need to squeak and orate in small enclosed means of transportation: Amtrak, subway, bus, Metro North.

Leatherman New Wave

Updated Jun 1, 2007

7 people recommended this item

Description

Multi-tools are a good stand in but aren't as good as the real thing. That said, having one of these in your backpack or in the glove compartment can mean the difference between a temporary inconvenience and a total pain in the butt.

They are also good gifts for just about anyone - even your female friend who gets a weekly manicure for herself and her bichon could use this. She may not know it when you give it to her, but someday she'll find herself using the needle-nosed pliers to pull quills out of Fifi's nose after a particularly traumatic run in with a porcupine.

Kids also like these. They have blades so check with the parents before giving their daughter something that will be used to saw the legs off the dining room table or inflict wounds on her little sister.

RUGGA picture hanging kit

Updated Mar 1, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

Grab one of these the next time you're in Ikea. You may not have an immediate need to hang pictures, but sometime in the next few months you will. I've ended up giving away about four of these over the years. Someone would mention that they were hanging pictures and didn't have the proper supplies, so I'd toss them one of these.

Gray (Duct) Tape - 2in. x 60 Yard Length

Updated Mar 1, 2007

5 people recommended this item

Description

Loving duct tape is a bit cliche, but when you stop looking at duct tape wallets and people who have duct taped their friends to the wall, there remains the amazingly functional product. Duct tape can be used to repair many, many things. It is pleasantly water resistant, able to withstand a good bit of wear and tear and it is just one of those things you should always have around somewhere. (via notcot)

EndNote bibliography software

Updated Jan 23, 2007

1st to recommend

Description

Endnote means that you don't have to constantly renumber your bibliography. It means that you won't have to type in references. It means that you won't go into a killing rage every time someone mentions the word bibliography in your presence.

It works hand in hand with Microsoft as a plugin and has both Mac and PC versions. If you are a full-time student you can get it at a significant discount.

And it really will reduce the urge to hit your computer.
