About this list:
My mother gave me some sage advice before I left for college: bring a small tool kit with you and you'll make a lot of friends.
Stanley Bostitch General Repair Tool Kit
First to recommend
Description
A simple tool kit that will handle most day to day repair problems. This isn't for someone who does a lot of work with tools, but is something that you should have around the house and around the office.

Stanley Tools: 6 headed screwdriver
First to recommend
Description
One of those tools that you should have in your toolbox. It handles fillips and flat screws with ease. Not the strongest screw driver, but one of the more useful ones when you discover that you need to take apart something in a hurry.

RUGGA picture hanging kit
First to recommend
Description
Grab one of these the next time you're in Ikea. You may not have an immediate need to hang pictures, but sometime in the next few months you will. I've ended up giving away about four of these over the years. Someone would mention that they were hanging pictures and didn't have the proper supplies, so I'd toss them one of these.

Gray (Duct) Tape - 2in. x 60 Yard Length
8 people recommended this item
Description
Loving duct tape is a bit cliche, but when you stop looking at duct tape wallets and people who have duct taped their friends to the wall, there remains the amazingly functional product. Duct tape can be used to repair many, many things. It is pleasantly water resistant, able to withstand a good bit of wear and tear and it is just one of those things you should always have around somewhere. (via notcot)

EndNote bibliography software
First to recommend
Description
Endnote means that you don't have to constantly renumber your bibliography. It means that you won't have to type in references. It means that you won't go into a killing rage every time someone mentions the word bibliography in your presence.
It works hand in hand with Microsoft as a plugin and has both Mac and PC versions. If you are a full-time student you can get it at a significant discount.
And it really will reduce the urge to hit your computer.

LERSTA Reading/floor lamp

Description
I have had one of these ten dollar floor lights by my bedside for four years now. Other than a bulb change every now and then, it has been a champ. It isn't complicated, it just works. It comes in three colours: silver, black and white. Get a couple, you'll find a place for them.

For your first apartment. This package of dishware is perfectly priced. The dishes are not ugly and they work. Ikea does a few things right, this is another.

BILLY storage system

Description
I think everyone has a love hate relationship with Ikea. I love the fact that I can afford furniture, but I deplore the fact that some of it is shoddy and that I can identify items as Ikea at first glance.
Billy bookcases are not shoddy, they are sturdy and easy to put together and best of all, their price is very reasonable. They come in enough colours that you can generally find something that works in your space. The little side units work nicely as CD storage.
I have a lot of books. I have a lot of Billy bookcases.

AAA membership

Description
Another membership that you can ask your parents or more distant relatives for as a birthday or Christmas gift. Along with roadside assistance when you break down, they will also come and help you when you lock your keys in the car.
AAA discounts are great at hotels and oddly enough when shopping for glasses (30% off at Pearle Vision and Lenscrafters), and a wide variety of other places. Take a look at their website for other discounts. (via James)
