Pente Board Game
First to recommend
Description
Pente is a pure strategy (no luck) game where two or more players try to be the first to place 5 of their stones in a row.
I think the best part about this game is that while the rules are simple and the games are often quick (usually less than 30 minutes in my experience), gameplay is relatively complex. It fits a nice niche between the too simple (connect 4) and the hard to master (go, chess) strategy games.

Platypus Big Zip II Reservoir - 3 Liter
First to recommend
Description
These are really convenient for hiking, since you don't have to stop, remove your pack, find your water, or put your pack back on. I like this one because it's 3 liters and is easy to put water in and clean. I recommend having 2 for long hikes, so you don't have to stop to refill much.

Apple iMac
47 people recommended this item
Description
The new iMacs are out today, and they're looking nicer than ever. Apple has gone all aluminum with the new models, giving them a thinner and more professional look. The small 17" screen has been dropped, leaving only 20" and 24" models, and you can now get up to 4GB of RAM and 1TB of hard disk (although Apple really jacks up the price if you want to go top of the line). There's a sleek new Apple keyboard too.
These look really tempting. If I were buying today, I would go for a 24" first, then upgrade to 2GB of RAM and see if I had anything left over for a hard drive upgrade. But I think I'll hold off until Leopard ships (should be only a few months now) and I'm also keeping my fingers crossed for a new Mac mini style device (since I already have a decent LCD).
One more thing - Apple also announced Numbers, a new spreadsheet program that's part of iWork '08. Robert Scoble gave it a good review, and I welcome any serious effort to reintroduce some competition into the Office market. Conspiracy alert! - I wonder if this has anything to do with the Apple software upgrade that crashed my MS Office last weekend?

The Making of the Atomic Bomb
First to recommend
Description
The truly fascinating story of the scientists and military and political leaders who conceived and developed the first atomic bomb. Well written, with great insight into the personalities and feelings of those involved.
The science and engineering work are covered fully, but I thought the most interesting parts were the thoughts of the scientists themselves - whether science should aid in developing such weapons, the effects on war and politics in the future, the fears of what could happen if Hitler or Stalin developed a bomb first.
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize. The same author also wrote Dark Sun, which is about the H-Bomb and covers a lot more of the spying and communist sympathies held by some of the scientists. If you only have time for one of these, this book is the better of the two.

Jaffurs Syrah (2005)
First to recommend
Description
We were recently introduced to this wine at a tasting room in Los Olivos, which is in the mountains just north of Santa Barbara. Our host considered it "What a Syrah should be", and Wine Spectator has given it a 90 point rating.
I'm not a professional wine critic, but I found it very smooth with incredible flavor, and consider it one of the best Syrah's I've tried so far. Jaffurs doesn't make huge quantities of this wine, and with its reasonable price (around $25) it may become hard to find very soon.

Big Brain Academy
First to recommend
3 people recommended this item
Description
In the same vein as Brain Age - this game tests your skills with a variety of timed puzzles. It isn't quite as polished as Brain Age and doesn't have handwriting or speech recognition, but makes up for this with a larger variety of puzzles.
I actually like most of these puzzles better than the Brain Age puzzles. Both games are cheap (around $20), so why not get both?

You don't want to be like everyone else and get a nano, do you? It's time to go retro my friends - back to the days when mp3 players had black and white screens. I recommend blue or the very rare green.

The Mountains of California (John Muir)
First to recommend
Description
This is a truly unique book, which covers the Sierra Nevada mountain range that Muir knew and loved so well. Part geology and geography lesson, part travelogue, part guidebook, this book discusses the Sierras with a breadth that would require quite a few modern books from different genres.
The writing is excellent and really sounds different - it almost seems like another language (it was first published in 1894). You can clearly see why Muir was such an influential figure. Great stories too - especially about his glacier climbing with no modern equipment.

Antennas Direct DB2 Multi Directional HDTV Antenna
First to recommend
Description
This is a very highly recommended HDTV antenna that costs less than $40. I've just ordered one and will write more once I've had a chance to use it.
Update: This antenna works very well, picking up at least 10 digital channels clearly even from the floor of my ground floor apartment in Santa Monica. Placement is important, so if you can't put it outside or next to a window with at least a partial view of the sky, I'd avoid an antenna. But if you want free TV and are willing to buy coax cable and do the work to mount the antenna, this is a great choice.
