Marmot PreCip Jacket For Men

First to recommend

Description

This lightweight, waterproof/breathable and windproof jacket (or shell) has been a staple of my hiking and skiing trips for years. Just add layers underneath depending on the weather (and avoid cotton), and you'll be prepared for most conditions.

Marmot makes quality gear that's not super expensive (these jackets are typically on sale for around $100). This jacket plus long sleeve layers underneath will work just as well as a heavier, more expensive jacket, and will be more versatile for warmer weather as well.

Stone Ruination IPA

First to recommend

Description

This is my favorite beer from Stone, a small brewery north of San Diego that is best known for their incredibly strong, bitter beers, most famously the "Arrogant Bastard" ale. Ruination is a very strong IPA, stronger than Stone's normal IPA but smoother than Arrogant Bastard.

If you like IPAs and don't like weak beer, you'll probably really like Ruination. Stone's normal IPA is also very good.

Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture by Martin Fowler

First to recommend

Description

I'm a practical software developer who usually focuses on rapid development, so a book with a title like this normally puts me off. However, I've been thumbing through a copy at the local bookstore and am really impressed with the practical advice it offers to application developers.

It's not specific to the web or database backed applications, but most of the patterns covered are directly applicable, and will help web app developers think through possible solutions.

Western Digital Passport Portable 250GB Hard Drive

6 people recommended this item

Description

I recently needed some extra disk space for storing some home movies, so I purchased this portable 250Gb drive. So far it has performed well, and is amazingly small (about the size of a nintendo DS or full size iPod).

If you're never going to take your external drive off your desk, you can get more for your money with a larger, heavier drive. But the cost difference is not that much, so unless you really need 500Gb or more of storage, a portable drive like this is a really convenient choice. The USB 2.0 connection is fast enough for my needs, and works well for both our Macs and PCs. This model also charges off its USB connection, saving clutter.

Simply Thai Cooking

First to recommend

4 people recommended this item

Description

This cookbook explains Thai cooking in easy to follow language. It's thick enough to contain all of the curries, soups, salads and noodle dishes you've heard of (and some that you probably haven't), but won't strain you're elbow when you're holding it in the kitchen.
