Spin Class 101 - a list by hwilson

About this list:

This list was designed for one of my co-workers who came to me for assistance in getting prepared to attend his first Spinning class. After I hooked him up with the basic info and the right equipment, I figured there might be other people out there in cyberspace that are also interested in attending a Spin class and don't have me as a co-worker. For all of you, here's everything you'll need! Enjoy! And, after you get your cycling legs - I challenge you to get a road bike & see what cycling's all about!

Qualifications:

I'm a road cyclist, former spin instructor, gearhead!

Spin Class 101 - Pearl Izumi Slice UltraSensor Cycling Shorts

First to recommend

Description

Pearl Izumi UltraSensor cycling shorts are definitely not the cheapest cycling shorts on the market. But, as is the case with all Pearl Izumi gear - it's worth the money. And, I warn you -- you do not want to skimp on your shorts. Cheap shorts = a sore butt. Trust me - you do not want to experience a saddle sore - ever! In terms of sizing, be sure to drop down one size from your normal sizing because you want your cycling shorts to fit snugly and you don't want any gaps or sagging. Buy yourself a couple of pairs, so you can rotate them and wash&dry them properly between workouts. Enjoy!

Spin Class 101 - Pearl Izumi Attack Glove

First to recommend

Description

Most people attending your typical spin class won't wear gloves, but I recommend gloves. Just like when you're out on the road hammering on your road bike, as you start to sweat your grip on the bike is impacted. Pearl Izumi makes a few different kinds of cycling gloves - all great. Buy yourself a pair of Pearl Izumi Attack Gloves and you won't have to think about your grip on the spin bike. You'll be able to focus on getting air in your lungs and how you can stop your legs from burning. Enjoy!

Spin Class 101 - C9 Muscle Tee

First to recommend

Description

C9 is a Target brand that provides a great price/value for athletic apparel. This recommendation is aimed at guys, but Target's C9 brand has plenty of gear for women as well. You could also substitute any athletic shirt that is NOT made of cotton and will wick moisture away from your body. These are great for spinning, but you don't want to wear a C9 shirt for an outdoor bike ride. So, pick up a few of these and you'll be ready to go for your spin class. Enjoy!

Spin Class 101 - Pearl Izumi Attack Sock

First to recommend

Description

As a cyclist or a spin class student, you should have a thin sock that will efficiently wick moisture away from your foot. Cyclists wear very thin socks because you want all of your energy to transfer from your body to the pedal with the smallest amount of that power absorbed by your sock or your shoe. So, resist the urge to wear your fat, cushy running socks when you go cycling or to your spin class. Be sure to buy a few pairs. Enjoy!

Spin Class 101 - Pearl Izumi brand

First to recommend

Description

This recommendation is a first for me in terms of ThisNext because I typically recommend products. But in the case of my Spin Class 101 list, I thought it was important to recommend the Pearl Izumi brand. As a new spin class student or as a new cyclist, you can rest assured that if you buy a Pearl Izumi product that you have a solid piece of clothing or equipment that will not let you down and will perform well over time. As you become a better cyclist or a pro at spinning - you may want to explore some of the high-end brands of cycling equipment. But, remember you won't find a better price/value brand for cycling gear! Enjoy!

Spin Class 101 - Shimano SH-56 Multi-Release SPD Cleats

First to recommend

Description

The most prevalent Spin bike used in gyms/fitness centers across the country is the Schwinn JohnnyG spin bike. This bike also features a double sided pedal that often has an SPD pedal on one side and either a Look pedal or a detachable toeclip on the other side. I recommend using SPD cleats on your cycling shoes and the SPD pedal on the Spin bike. You will need to get some help from either your intructor or a friend to mount these cleats properly.

Spin Class 101 - Shimano Men's Mountain Bike Shoes - SH-M122B

First to recommend

Description

The temptation for a person attending their first Spin class is to buy a cheap pair of cycling shoes or to wear their running shoes and to use the toe clips. Both of these options are horrible and may not only ruin your experience in your Spin class, but could cause you physical injury (if your foot slips off the pedal). I recommend buying a nice pair of mid-range mountain bike shoes with SPD cleats. Clipping in to the SPD pedals on the Spin bike will give you the complete push/pull action of outdoor cycling and give you a more complete workout.

Spin Class 101 - Clif Shot, Razz Sorbet flavor, 24-pack

First to recommend

Description

During your first few spin classes you may get gassed or just completely bonk during the class. So, I always recommend that all people attending a Spin class use an energy gel after about 30 minutes to keep their exertion level high enough to get the maximum benefit from a Spin class. Razz Sorbet is my favorite flavor of Clif Shot. And, Clif Shot is the best tasting, easiest gel to digest that I've ever tried.
