Joe Versus the Volcano

3 people recommended this item

Description

"My father says that almost the whole world is asleep. Everybody you know. Everybody you see. Everybody you talk to. He says that only a few people are awake and they live in a state of constant total amazement."

"I have less than six months to live. The Waponis believe they need a human sacrifice or their island is going to sink into the ocean. They have this mineral your father wants so he hired me to leap into their volcano."
"What?"
"You're not going to make me say that again, are you?"

"And why, I ask myself, why have I put up with you? I can't imagine, but now I know. Fear. Yellow freakin' fear. I've been too chicken shit afraid to live my life so I sold it to you for three hundred freakin' dollars a week!"

Metropolis

2 people recommended this item

Description

"We shall build a tower that will reach to the stars!" Having conceived Babel, yet unable to build it themselves, they had thousands to build it for them. But those who toiled knew nothing of the dreams of those who planned. And the minds that planned the Tower of Babel cared nothing for the workers who built it. The hymns of praise of the few became the curses of the many - BABEL! BABEL! BABEL! - Between the mind that plans and the hands that build there must be a Mediator, and this must be the heart."

Zardoz

2 people recommended this item

Description

"I am Arthur Frayn, and I am Zardoz. I have lived 300 years, and long to die. But death is no longer possible, I am immortal. I present now my story - full of mystery and intrigue. Rich in irony, and most satirical. It is set deep within a possible future, so none of these events have yet occurred. But they may! Be warned, lest you end as I. In this tale I am a fake god by occupation, and a magician by inclination. Merlin is my hero! I am the puppet master. I manipulate many of the characters and events you will see. But I am invented too for your entertainment and amusement. And you, poor creatures, who conjured you out of the clay? Is God in show business too?"

Idiocracy

5 people recommended this item

Description

"Unaware of what year it was, Joe wandered the streets desperate for help. But the English language had deteriorated into a hybrid of hillbilly, valleygirl, inner-city slang and various grunts. Joe was able to understand them, but when he spoke in an ordinary voice he sounded pompous and faggy to them."

"The #1 movie in America was called "Ass." And that's what it was. For 90 minutes. It won four Oscars that year, including best screenplay."

"Brawndo: The Thirst Mutilator: It's got what plants crave! It's got electrolytes! What are electrolytes?! I don't know! But Brawndo is full of them! That's why it's like a Monster Truck you can pour into your face!"

Fahrenheit 451

Description

"Well, it's a job just like any other. Good work with lots of variety. Monday, we burn Miller; Tuesday, Tolstoy; Wednesday, Walt Whitman; Friday, Faulkner; and Saturday and Sunday, Schopenhauer and Sartre. We burn them to ashes and then burn the ashes. That's our official motto."

"Fahrenheit four-five-one is the temperature at which book paper catches fire and starts to burn."

Description

"If you want a vision of the future, Winston, imagine a boot stamping on a human face forever."

"In accordance to the principles of Doublethink, it does not matter if the war is not real, or when it is, that victory is not possible. The war is not meant to be won. It is meant to be continuous. The essential act of modern warfare is the destruction of the produce of human labor. A hierarchical society is only possible on the basis of poverty and ignorance. In principle, the war effort is always planned to keep society on the brink of starvation. The war is waged by the ruling group against its own subjects. And its object is not victory over Eurasia or Eastasia, but to keep the very structure of society intact. Julia? Are you awake? There is truth, and there is untruth. To be in a minority of one doesn't make you mad."

Description

"Paranoia is just reality on a finer scale."

"See... I can get you what you want, I can. I can get you anything, you just have to talk to me, you have to trust me. You can trust me, 'cause I'm your priest, I'm your shrink... I am you main connection to the switchboard of he soul. I'm the magic man... Santa Claus of the subconscious. You say it, you think it, you can have it."

"The issue's not whether you're paranoid, Lenny, I mean look at this shit, the issue is whether you're paranoid enough."

"No plan is perfect, Lenny. Hey, cheer up. World's gonna end in ten minutes anyway."

Logan's Run

First to recommend

Description

Logan's Run takes place in the distant future, in a hedonistic society where people live until age 30 and then are "renewed" (read: terminated) in a ritual called Carousel, a one for one cycle of birth and death controlled by the state. The only other option after turning 30 is to run, and there are hunters called Sandmen who will try to stop runners as they attempt to flee to a mythical place called Sanctuary.

Logan 5 is a Sandman until his 30th birthday approaches and he decides to run.

The Omega Man

Description

"We waited for you, Neville, so you could see this: The end. The end of all you done. You see, none of it was real. It was illusion. Your art, your science, it was all a nightmare. And now it's done. Finished. My brethren, our task is nearly complete. He was the last of those who brought the punishment to us. We have cleansed and purged his world. Now we must build."
"Build coffins. That's all you'll need."
"Bring him!"
