Icelandic Glacial Water

First to recommend

Description

This water comes from Iceland, one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. As such, the water is very pure.

The first thing you notice about Icelandic Glacial is the bottle. While not over the top by any means, the ridges and curves are meant to evoke a glacier, which is where this water is (indirectly) sourced. You'll also see a happy, green, eco-friendly 'Carbon Neutral' label - the company buys carbon offsets for all pollution emitted from production and transportation of the product.

With that out of the way, let's get to the taste. Similar to Fiji water, Icelandic Glacial is mined from an underground aquifer covered by lava rock. The water inside (officially called The Ölfus spring) is replenished from high in the mountains by a gradual filter of rainfall, snow and ice melt.

The shielding makes Icelandic Glacial quite pure, extremely low in nitrates and with a low minerality. The taste is....pure, in a good way. Dedicated aquaphiles may notice the slightest hint of silica sweetness, but due to geography this is no where near the level found in something like Fiji water.

The minerals are well balanced, with no one element taking center stage. It leaves a slightly crisp taste, like SmartWater, but without the chemical bite, and it maintains its flavour even when warm.

Jana Natural Artesian Water

First to recommend

Description

I'm back with another water review!

Jana is an all-around solid water that comes from Croatia. They call it 'Artesian', I suspect, as it's sourced from deep wells that feed into an underground aquifer.

The glass bottles are quite lovely - nothing too flashy, nothing too simple. What about the water though?

I have to say, I like it! It strikes a nice balance between mineral-heavy waters like Evian and light waters such as Icelandic Glacial. In layman's terms, it's got just enough minerals to provide a slightly full mouth feel without overdoing it. I taste no metallic or chemical elements, and a small amount of silica gives it just a hint of sweetness.

You can purchase it online directly from the company, which has offices in New York, or you can buy it in the metro area in most major drugstores.

Try it, you just might like it! Perfect for the intermediate level aquaphile.

Dasani Water

First to recommend

Description

Dasani is one of a handful of waters on the market on which you can't find the words 'natural' or 'spring'. It's purified tap water, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Dasani uses 'reverse osmosis' to remove pretty much everything from their tap water supply. They then add Magnesium, Potassium and Chloride to give it some taste. I find Dasani...ok. It tastes fresh (due to the chlorine and such) but is a teeny bit metallic (magnesium). They tried to make it taste crisp but I don't feel that.

Bottom line: Clean, fresh water. A little metallic. Better than some taps, but If you have a choice, try Aquafina.

FIJI Natural Artesian Water

19 people recommended this item

Description

Once again I throw my hat into an already occupied ring. But here's what the Joox thinks of Fiji water.

Different. Definitely different in a good way. Extremely well balanced and low-key chlorine and sodium tastes, which lets a very tasty flavor come through. This water is sweet, something no other spring water is. I think it has a nice, strong bicarb background.

Scarily enough I'm not joking about this description. I'm a committed aquaphile. I think I know what I'm talking about, but then again I could be hilariously wrong.

Anyway, Bottom line: Fresh, SWEET water. THE water to give 'water-haters' (it'll convince them otherwise). Real easy to chug, even more enjoyable to sip. Unique square bottle. A little pricey.

The company buys carbon offsets for the considerable pollution emitted for transportation, which is a nice eco-friendly plus sign.

Metromint water

Description

Metro Mint lives at the flavor midpoint between peppermint tea and Scope: strong but not too strong. I just discovered it this winter and can't wait to have some on an August Sunday in the backyard while lying out (slathered in SPF 30, natch). It will, I expect, lower my core temperature immediately upon contact with my innards. Graphic, perhaps, but this is powerful stuff. (via Metro Mint)

Poland Spring

First to recommend

Description

Poland spring is the epitome of blandish spring water for the masses. And there's nothing wrong with that. It's one of many brands under a large conglomerate that sells spring waters all over the country. (No relation to any James Bond plots. Hopefully.)

When I say bland, I mean it's really, terribly unexciting. Poland Spring filters and adjusts the minerals to tiny amounts and in precise ratios to each other. This gives the water an H20 taste. Meaning, it tastes like.... water. Almost nothing else reaches the tongue. It's refreshing in that, well, every water is refreshing way, but really nothing special.

Bottom line: Not worth the casual aquaphile's time. Perfectly drinkable but almost no taste. Some people with stomach problems actually prefer the mineral-less taste. Otherwise, this is the water aqua-haters love to hate.
