Dressing in the Dark

3 people recommended this item

Description

While the world of fashion and its increasingly versatile and accessible menswear wing is still a little too dandyish for most guys to get behind when looking for some style advice, movies are quite acceptable. The genius of Dressing in the Dark is the realization that film provides a filter between fashion and reality that makes the average guy a little more comfortable. That said, classic onscreen style for men relies a bit too heavily on the hungover-mod tropes of the Rat Pack and Bond -- a space where a ten-o'clock shadow and cuff links fit perfectly -- but contemporary men's men like Sean Penn and Brad Pitt round the text out nicely.

Dick: A User's Guide

First to recommend

Description

If you ever let slip that you are ready to marry yourself, be prepared for a variety of readings. On the recommendation of someone whose humor and taste I trust far more than her willingness to steer me in directions bound by any sense of propriety, I've taken a look at Dick: A User's Guide [a tatorandtots Book Club selection]. I like to think I've, uh, got a handle on the topic, but I'm always willing to learn. The content is a bit wanky, based as much of it is in real-life stories from the author's medical practice. But as an exhaustive resource on the penis, you simply can't beat Dick.

Lomography Fisheye Book

First to recommend

Description

it's safe to say at this point that Lomography is a recognized lowbrow artform. Fisheye collects hundreds of fisheye photos, with plenty of characteristically Lomo idiosyncrasy, and the book including text from Lomo pros on a variety of techniques.

Perfect from Now On

Description

Remarkably or not, there are people out there who will read what a former Donkey Kong champ (circa-1982) has to say about drinking beer with Robert Pollard. You know who you are, and you love knowing that 95% of everyone else reading this have no idea who Robert Pollard is. Am I right?

Thank You and You're Welcome

Description

Just in case you had any doubts that Kanye West was a poet...he's taken a cue from Jenny Holzer and published a collection of Kanye-isms. It all runs the risk of being either too clever or (as Kanye can often have trouble with) too morally astute to take seriously, as in "I would rather lose because someone else was right than win when I'm wrong." But there you are.

Once Upon a Time - Jeremy Fish Art

First to recommend

Description

This leather-bound collection of Jeremy Fish art is a handsome way to bring together a broad set of paintings and drawings that have appeared in various media. Lowbrow art in San Francisco doesn't get much more significant than this at the moment.

Description

If you trust PSFK as an arbiter of cool, this Snapshot book of "innovative businesses, events, organizations and ideas" in San Francisco should hit the spot. If getting offline means anything, this is a nice step. (via swissmiss)
