Jun Gifts: Noren

First to recommend

Description

Noren are Japanese hanging cloth curtains or room dividers. They also hang in doorways. You may have seen them in a Japanese restaurant at some point.

Jun Gifts has a huge selection of noren ranging from really quite beautiful to not so much so. If you have an apartment, as I do, which at one point had large doors dividing the space and no longer does (pocket doors in Victorian era homes for instance) you can use these to separate the space. They can also be used as curtains or just wall hangings.

I especially enjoy the indigo dyed noren.

This company also has a large selection of furoshiki (piece of cloth to wrap packages or your bento box in), yukata (generally cotton kimono-style garment), daruma, and so on.

Bjorn Wiinblad posters

First to recommend

Description

Bjorn Wiinblad was a Danish artist mainly known for his ceramics. I've loved his posters and prints for years but had a hard time finding them in modern editions and an expensive time finding them on Ebay. I've found a nice collection of them at the Dansk Plakatmuseum for rather reasonable prices.

Wiinblad is a master of whimsy and colour. (via my grandparents)

Etsy Seller: Vladmaster

First to recommend

Description

Vladmaster makes handmade viewmaster disks which tell a story. Some of the stories include a soundtrack CD. These seem magical to me and I love the idea of putting the viewmaster disk in and dropping into a strange world.

Vladmaster's shop also sells viewmaster viewers.

Etsy Seller: Aashberg

Description

Beautiful handmade wood furniture. Great lines, a good cross between modern looks with traditional material.

I'm really enjoying the wide range of things that Etsy has to offer, and find that I'm constantly amazed at the amazing things that I find there. (via Apartment Therapy: San Francisco)

Obey the Purebreed

First to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

This site has a variety of posters and t-shirts with rebellion encouraging dogs of many, many breeds. Sometimes I like to make fun of the pet-directed artwork because so much of it is cheezy. This is bright forceful design that isn't cutesy.

Griffin Technology: iMic - USB Audio Interface

First to recommend

Description

An inexpensive way to convert your vinyl and tapes to the digital world. For around $40, I again can listen to the Pokey Little Puppy which was the bane of my parents existence when I was about seven, or take my LPs on my commute, or save the mix tape that my college boyfriend made for me.

It comes with software that lets you make mp3s and is Mac and PC compatible. (via Popgadget)

Etsy Seller: Artistic Nature

First to recommend

Description

A variety of finely crafted items including felt bags, rugs, a few stickers. One of those Etsy shops where you're really aware of the skill of the person making these things. The kind of item that quietly catches the eye.

Weather Underground

First to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

This weather site is a bit messy in terms of advertisements flickering everywhere, but it provides you with the goods: accurate weather forecasts, radar, and an hour by hour outline of the forecast. It is this last feature that endears it to me most.

If you're planning on taking a run, you can check what time the rain is predicted to happen. If you want to go fly a kite, it lets you know what time the winds will be best.

In brief: design is a bit ugly, functionality is nice.

Oh yeah, they also show air quality and link to an allergy forecast as well.

Lifehacker, the Productivity and Software Guide

Description

If Heloise's helpful hints were run by a combination of crafty and slashdotty people, they would look a lot like Lifehacker.

I'd say about 20% of the things on here are relevant to me. I've followed their software advice fairly frequently and enjoyed some of their tips of organization as well.

I've shown the site to about ten people over the past couple of years and I think about half of them visit it frequently. That's a pretty good percentage.
